  1. Informational Writing In-Text Citation

  2. Use the introductory text in your writing to strengthen the support of your ideas. • The introductory text not only informs you about the topic of your prompt but gives your good source material for your composition.

  3. It includes facts and examples concerning your topic. USE the facts and examples in your composition!!!

  4. If you use information from the introductory text, you must CITE the information. • “Cite” means to mention the author and source from whom and where the quote came. • In-text citation: When you mention someone’s idea in your paper. • Signal Phrase: A phrase that signals to the reader that a direct quote is about to follow.

  5. Proper in-text citation • According to author in title of source, • Open quotation marks • Write down the quote word for word • End with quotation marks

  6. In-text Citation Example: • Increasing property taxes in the district is one possible solution. According to T.S Lee in “Too Many Students,” “Existing schools need to be expanded and news schools need to be built. This costs a great deal of mean, which is in short supply.” A tax increase will mean an increase for the school budget. The new monies would allow school districts to build new schools or simply add new classrooms to existing schools. In addition, schools will be able to buy sufficient textbooks for the students. If people in the communities complain of the tax increase, then they will have to be reminded that their dollars are going towards their children’s education.

  7. According to T.S Lee in “Too Many Students,” “Existing schools need to be expanded and news schools need to be built. This costs a great deal of mean, which is in short supply.”

  8. If you fail to cite the author and source, you are plagiarizing. • Plagiarism occurs when one presents ideas of another his or her own.

  9. You should not use no more than 1-2 quotes in your composition. • WHY? • Overuse of quotes takes ownership of your composition away from you. • Your composition should state YOUR ideas not someone’s else’s.
