  1. Barrel Racing

  2. Directions Divide into 2 teams. Pick a stick pony for each team. A measurement will flash on the screen. Get on your pony, make a figure 8 around the two barrels. At the second barrel, pick the item that matches the given measurement. Place that item on the marker for your team with the appropriate measurement. Give the stick pony to the next member of your team. If the screen flashes off before the team member has picked an item or made it back to their team, they must return immediately and give the pony to the next person. The winner is the first team to be finished with the most correct answers.

  3. Teacher Notes: The following items were in the barrels. 1 foot- 12 in ruler; Cylinder- coke can; 1 yard- yard stick of bubble gum; Right Triangle- Plastic Right triangle;1 line of symmetry- Note pads from the dollar store in the shape of an E and a Teddy Bear; Rectangular Prism- Round up- Candy Sticks ( candy cigarettes) with a cowboy on the front; Mass of 1 mg- dollar bill; Cone- plastic cone used in PE bought at the dollar store; Sphere- round bean bag from dollar store; Cup- cup from the dollar store. The two horses used were bought at Fred’s Dollar Store for $5 each. This activity was designed to get students out of their desks. After all, it requires movement for learning to take place. We used the measurement theme. However, this activity can be modified in any way. For example, answers to problems, coordinate grids, etc could be placed in the barrel. The students would pick up the answer as it flashed on the screen instead of an item. Use and enjoy! Please share your adaptations.
