  1. The Power Of Tsunamis:What Causes A Tsunami?

IntroductionThe Environment The instructor will engage students in a blended learning environment, which will be a combination of face-to-face classroom meetings and also an online course site that will have free Blackboard course room access. Given this blended learning opportunity, the instructor will be better able to meet the needs of the diverse learners. The instructor will ensure to incorporate classroom group presentations, experiments, e-books, video presentations and images in the course, in effort to make learning more expressive, engaging, representative and accessible to all

  3. The Population The students participating in this e-learning module will be a group of 5th grade students from a community in Newport, Rhode Island. The school caters to students of various ages, ethnicity and background.” Students’ ages range from 5 through 15 years, and their ethnicity includes; Hispanics, African Americans, Middle East, West Indies and Caucasian students. Most of the students attending the institution are from low family incomes. Approximately 40% of the school’s population are low achievers. These learners are diverse because they are different in many ways such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, learning modalities, cognitive development, social development, and the rate at which they take in and retrieve information.

Learning Objectives • By the end of the e-learning lesson, a group of 5th graders will be able to: • Through the exploration of a wide range of resources and activities, describe what is a tsunami with 100% accuracy, • after conducting multiple researches on tsunamis, identify the causes of a tsunami, including earthquakes, volcanoes and landslides with 100% accuracy and, • with the knowledge gained from the e-learning module, create a tsunami disaster safety kit

The Prototype: Accessing Haiku Course site • First you need to be connected to the internet, using a preferred web browser, such as; Firefox, Google chrome and Safari. • You will be sent an email invitation from the instructor in order to access Haiku Course Site • Accept invitation and complete the simple sign up steps. • As soon as you are successfully signed up, start browsing t the features of the site and read the pop up guide explaining each feature. • Students will review the site’s portal that shows active classes available for students

The portal combines information from all your classes. • The portal provides a list of all your classes, references, discussions and a mini calendar with what is due and recent activities with what is new. • You can also view the announcements for the course and your grade summary. • Please note that the portal tab is what you see when you log in to Haiku learning What is Portal?

You will be given the opportunities to participate in lively discussions, create wikis, share videos and resources related to topic. You will have a great experience working and sharing on Haiku learning. Your parents will also be invited to view your progress and leave comments to help motivate you throughout this module!   9. Content What is a tsunami? Tsunamis are not very frequent, but they are among the most devastating and complex physical phenomena that have contributed to a great loss of life and destruction of property. According to (Voice of America, 2011), “tsunami is a series of large waves generated by an abrupt movement on the ocean floor that can result from an earthquake, an underwater landslide, a volcanic eruption or - very rarely - a large meteorite strike” (para. 1). “Over 51,000 coastal residents have been killed by 94 destructive tsunamis in the past century” (Parker, 2012, p. 1). Japan is one of the most populated coastal regions of the world and has had a lengthy history of earthquake activity. Tsunamis have destroyed the entire coastal populations in Japan which caused many devastations

  10. Let us get started! Task # 1- What is a tsunami? You will discuss what is a tsunami for the first week of the module by reviewing the resources and activities. You will: • Veiw a Youtube video on tsunami and make short notes on what is a tsunami and its effect. Click here to view video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvVEeSuMorg • Create a mind map outlining in point format your previous knowledge on Tsunami and you current knowledge • Embed your mindmap in your e-portfolio in showing your work • Be creative in presenting your mindmap. It will be graded!

  11. Task # 2- What causes a tsunami? You will identify what causes a tsunami for the second week of the module by reviewing the resources and activities. You will: • Work in groups of three to review and discuss the week’s resources on the Haiku learning site • Conduct research outside of the course material • Develop a slide show presentation to demonstrate your understanding of this week’s resources • Embed and submit your group presentation in your e-portfolio for peer review • Remember to be creative in your quest to achieve a high score! Utilize appropriate graphics and images!

  12. Task # 3- Discovering Survival Skills You will explore tsunami survival skills for the third week of the module by reviewing the resources and activities.   13. Task # 4 - Creating A Disaster Safety Kit You will create your own virtual safety disaster kit with the knowledge you have gained from the module. Use visual representations and appropriate labels in designing your kit. Be creative in your presentation. Make sure to utilize appropriate graphics and images for items in your kit! At the end of the week you will compete 8 multiple choice and short answer questions.
