  1. Methodology qualitative surveybased on individual dialogue withfarmers in februray 2012 40 minutes phone conversation conducted by agriculture specializedsurveyors Typology… cerealsfarmers ( minimum of 50 ha of wheat or maize)vine growers( minimum of 5 à 10 ha of grapes), Responsible for treatments Regular user of pesticides 50% withemployees Geographicalrepartition Vinegrowers Cereals+vines Cereals farmers
  2. Farmers expectations from crop protection companies/user safety issues

  3. … potentially hazardous For health For the environment … and costful but Feeling about crop protection products Perceived as … useful, even essential When you have diseases on your vineyard, threre is nothing to do except to spray To feed the planet, we need cpp » a real will to reduce the used quantities of « hazardous » pesticides That means reduction doses and number of applications For a significativ part of of farmers the hazardousnesss of products become a choice criterium « my health first » A divided attitude/pesticides
  4. Pesticides use and user safety protection measures all farmers are saying: generally speaking less and less time to do farm works And especially less time for treatments (reglementation ,meteo, farm sizes,…)  tendancy of an « automatic way » of working , to reduce their attention and to neglect labels reading
  5. Partly neglected + - but and Pesticides use and user safety protection measures In this context user safety is … known … considered as important Gloves Other ppe are less worn with big differences betwwen farmers But use of masks is growing Farmers knows they have to protect themselves but : lack of praticity, of comfort, costs, lack of time, doubt on ppe efficacy are real brakes to ppe uses
  6. but Information on user safety measures Farmers know that information about toxicity is on packaging ( hazard pictos) and labels. They consider that: This specific information is lost by a mass of others Too small writing/not readable A lack of clarity ( R phrases meaning for instance) in labels people focus their attention mainly on Technical specifications Modes of application For the present packaging and labels are not strong enough ways of user safety information
  7. Information about user safety issues Followingfarmerssayings : the best way to to focus the attention of farmers and theiremployeesis to Repete the messages C’est très très bien de nous le dire, nous alerter et nous redire, parce que petit à petit on arrivera à faire changer notre attitude et c’est tant mieux » Build new messages and/or way of communication Direct messages , key messages » Employersare more concernedthan non employers Farmers are asking for continuing communication actions in order to raise their consciousness « in spite of themselves, subliminal ! ».
  8. 1 Farmers expectations from crop protection companies/user safety issues They are waiting for more secure utilisation of pesticides, that means: At product level: research for safer a.i. for user « better formulation to reduce exposure : no powder or dusty granular, liquid or flowing granular , water soluble bags…
  9. 2 3 Farmers expectations from crop protection companies/user safety issues Companies communication: ppe proposed by pesticides companies more transparency on real dangerousness level on each product/ More precise and differentiate information « too global information » a more precise information on pesticides use risks « more practical use advices To reduce maximum of contacts withproductsduring manipulation or utilisation Ergonomicsand praticity of packagings Packagings linked to ha dose Farmers are waiting that companies take more responsability related to the dangerousness of their products , more transparency and advices to limit their exposure to crop protection products
  10. Majority minority And above all… Pictos concept test – Concept of pictos on screw caps: global opinion « Globally speaking what do you think about the idea of a message about user safety on screw caps?» More or less for all farmers , a project considered by farmers:… All farmers estimated that the location on screw cap is judicious original Label is banal » Screw cap=first contact in the product manipulation chronology Visible location/ unavoidable for all users … useful Because repetition of best practices is useful » … superfluous Except for employees’ » But not harmful Better to do it than not do it »
  11. Pictos concept test Repartitionatrandom in 6 booklets Test methodology:6 pictos tested (real size): 1 picto/page
  12. but but Pictos concept test Project 1 Feed back: Clear = you have to see the label Banal Too common and simple, not enough strong Project 2 Feed back : Clear Attractive and visual: focus the attention Not enough incentive to vigilance Indication but not an alert… » Message is clear but limited effect because: Labels are not often read, employees only follow farmer instructions ‘_Too general message _Not related to individual protection  more related to use indications (dose, …) Not enough precise message
  13. but Pictos concept test Projet 3 The message is considered… Not very incentive for protection: We already know we have to protect ourself , this message do not add something more» It do not add precise information on protection required … clear People tell us what to do » … unprecise Protect yourself but from what? » Not enough incentive message
  14. mais + - Pictos concept test Projet 5 Feed back: Projet 4 Feed back Clear but banal protect yourself is too basic! » We do not pay really attention … and red colour is not related to hazard « orange that means: if you don’t do it is not serious » Reddiamondmeanshazard « itconcerns an humanlike us ,the users» … onlyassociated to inhalation risk … or diffusion of toxicsubstances through the body the meaning of the picto is unclear The hazard notion is clear but not enough incentive for protection
  15. and Pictos concept test Project 6 Feed back Most efficient picto , incentive for protection … could be even stronger ! Very clear We have to wear ppe » We know how to protect ourself Complete =check list of ppe » Good way not to forget something » This project is the more incitative one and some improvement could be even brought.
  16. and/oru Pictos concept test Projet 5 – way of improvement Majority of farmers thinks that impacting visuals are required to be efficient for focusing farmers attention Farmers proposal to increase the impact: A stronger signal of alert with: A less banal picto like this one ? : To replace the orange colour by red (related to hazard) Farmer proposal to adapt the picto and the colours To the product user toxicity Could be good to have a graduation »  In order to avoid making commonplace
  17. Pictos concept test – Impact on BASF Agro awareness Farmers think that could improve the company public image La firme qui ferait ça, elle marquerait un ‘plus’ » This action could be considered by farmers like: But it is clear that the first priority for farmers is focused on practicity and ergonomy as far as packaging is concerned … a part of its stewardship job … a way of competition differenciation A benefit in term of public image if this action fits also with packaging improvement and all stewardship issues regarding farmer safety; If not could be considered like « an artificial action »
