3. 3 Objectives After completing the material in this chapter, the student should be able to:
Install piping used to carry oil to the furnace.
Explain the operation of the filter and de-aerator.
List and describe three methods commonly used to remove flue gases from the structure.
Install vent piping to carry by-products of combustion away from the furnace.
Start up an oil furnace.
Test for proper combustion in an oil furnace.
Troubleshoot problems with an oil furnace.
4. 4 Fuel Oil Fuel oil used for residential purposes is classified as #2 fuel oil.
Primarily made from 15% hydrogen and 85% carbon.
Btu rating is approximately 19,560 Btu/pound and 139,400 Btu/gallon.
5. 5 Combustion Heat, fuel, and oxygen are required for combustion.
Oil must be atomized for combustion.
