  2. It’s Important to Know!!! • Why is it important to know the procedures for creating proper references? • If you plan on continuing into higher education • Being able to create an accurate "Works Cited" page is essential to your academic success in high school and college

  3. INTEGRITY OF WORDS • Properly citing your sources is crucial for professional and academic integrity. • CREDITBILITY = BELIEVABILITY

  4. WHOSE WORDS……. • Without cited sources, you're plagiarizing, even if you're paraphrasing. Correct formatting will add polish and respectability to your work.

  5. Web Sites-Wealth of Info • Copy the URL of every website you use for research, even when you're just using the information instead of paraphrasing or quoting directly. • Aseparate page at the end of your paper or project that lists references. This will save you time and trouble when you're ready to finalize the format. Once you've finished writing, delete the websites you didn't use. • Bookmark folder—for the sites you accessed

  6. How Valid are My Sources • Web Sites—use a valid web site to use quoted material from • Web Sites that are valid usually are: • .gov • .edu • .org • Google, Wikipedia, News Service Sites • Awareness of the dates of the article

  8. Different Sources • What is the difference between Primary and Secondary Sources? • Primary Source---the researcher actually completes the research themselves. • Secondary Source—Using information that has already been collected. (Bullying Report sources)

  9. Web Citations….. 1) Author's surname, first name. 2) "Title of article." 3) Name of home website. 4) Publisher. 5) Date of the article's on-site publication. 6) Web. 7) Date article was accessed by you 8) <URL in angled brackets>.

Electronic Note Cards • Great Organizational Tool that can be edited or combined with other cards. • Organize noted references, web sites, quoted material into one digital location. • Format and Record actual reference for inclusion into the Works Cited Page • Card # 1-Front of Card—Cited reference for site • Card # 1A—Back of Card—actual quotes, paraphrased information. • One Set of cards for each reference or source.

What Must Be Cited? • Any words that are quoted and referenced within a body of work must be acknowledged. • The acknowledgement of a quotation from a source is called a citation. • Place the abbreviated citation in parentheses ( ) • Short Quotations • To indicate short quotations (fewer than four typed lines of prose or three lines of verse) in your text: • Enclose the quotation within double quotation marks.

  12. Long Quotes • Long Quotations • For quotations that extend to more than four lines, place quotations in a free-standing block of text and omit quotation marks. Start the quotation on a new line, with the entire quote indented one inch from the left margin

  13. In-Text Citations • Basic In-Text Citation Rules-- • Referring to the works of others in your text is done by using what is known as parenthetical citation. • This method involves placing relevant source information in parentheses after a quote or a paraphrase.
