  5. The clock • Gatsby almost knocks over the clock on the mantelpiece • “defunct mantelpiece clock” • Is there any importance in defunct?

  6. Nick’s commentary on Gatsby’s house • “Americans, while occasionally willing to be serfs, have always been obstinate about being peasantry.”
