  1. New Seating Chart! • Literature Circle Project Overview • Book Options • Lit Term Pre-Test Agenda “We read to know that we are not alone.” ~William Nicholson 9 Apr. 2013

Literature Circle Project • Between now and May 24th, you’ll be reading a book we haven’t had time to get to this year. • You’ll get to choose your top three from a list of eleven, then I’ll balance out the list so we have enough for group conversation days • At least three people need to choose the same book to make it a “a go” • While you listen to the descriptions, jot down the names of the books you think you are interested in. At the end, I’ll ask you to rank your top three!

Basic Overview • You’ll have two reading journals to do during the course of the reading • I have them schedule to be turned in BEFORE your practice speeches start so you can focus more on the SP stuff! • You’ll have two book quizzes • You’ll have two assignments with your group members • You’ll have some additional online activities through Edmodo (chatting about the book, posting articles, asking questions…) • You’ll have a final in-class essay about your book

What’s Edmodo? • A social networking-style website for you to post interesting articles to, to ask questions of your group members, and for you to participate in online discussions. • It’s a free app-if you want to work on your mobile device, download it! • You need a code to join: • 4th: tzd23r • 5th: 82aprm • 6th:wysjao

  5. Important to Remember • This is a school assignment, so therefore, EVERYTHING posted and discussed needs to be about the assignments…no side comments, inside jokes, etc., please. • Needs to be school appropriate in language (and please edit for spelling and grammar!)  • If you have concerns about access to technology resources, talk to me to make sure we can make it work for you.

  6. Work Time • Lots of in-class reading time for this, but not much in-lab writing time for reading journals, research, etc. Please make sure to budget your homework time wisely. • Your group will complete some tasks together, and they’re there to help you when you’re confused about something, but this is primarily an individual assignment

  8. Lit Term Pre-Test (do this in your Bellwork Journal) 1. List and define the 5 stages of plot. (10 points) (1 bonus point for right order!) 2. In a story, who is the protagonist? Who is the antagonist? (2 points) 3. What does it mean if a character is “dynamic?” (1 point) 4. What’s the difference between a “round” character and a “flat” character? (3 points) 5. Define theme. (2 points) 6. What does it mean if a story is told from “first person” point of view? (2 points) 7. What are the three types of non-participant point of view? (3 points) 8. Define tone. (2 points) 9. Write an example of an internal conflict. (2 points) 10. What are the three types of external conflicts? (3 points)
