Leaky gut occurs when cracks or holes develop in the lining of the intestinal tract. Usually, gluten causes these gut cells to release zonulin, a protein that can break apart tight junctions in the intestinal lining. However, sometimes factors like infections, toxins, stress and age can also cause these tight junctions to break apart. When these tight junctions break apart, you have a leaky gut syndrome.
