Danish National Adaptation Platform Dr. Louise Grøndahl
Background • Danish stategy on cca was adopted in 2008 • One of the initiatives was to establish a webportal • The webportal was launched in January 2009 – and is continously developed • The webportal is a tool to guide the users - local and regional planners – through the process of adaptation planning, from fundamental understanding of change in climate to being able to integrate its consequences into decision making. • A webGIS has been developed – interactive maps and tools are available at the portal • Best practice and cases are provided Eionet meeting
Input to the web portal • Task Force for climate change adaptation is responsible for the maintenance and development of the portal and tools. • Ministries and agencies provide information to the portal. • Research institutions provide the scientific basis and research results. Eionet meeting
Target groups • Municipalities! • Businesses • Citizens • Need information on: • Facts • -Which scenario? • -How much will sea level rise and where? • Tools • Guidance • Cases • News Eionet meeting
Web portal Eionet meeting
Climate data – interactive maps • Various climate data (temperature, precipitation, wind and cloud coverage • A2, B2, EU 2 degree target and A1B scenarios • Temporal resolution mid century (2021-50) and end century (2071-2100), reference 1961-90 • Annual, seasonal and monthly mean values • Graph functionality • Report functionality Eionet meeting
Tools • Available tools: • Interactive maps - Climate data • Coastal planner • ”Flooding from sea”-tool • Interactive map – municipal plans and strategies • Local climate impact planner – inspired by UKCIP • Climate meter (English) • Resilient house (English) • Groundwater – future groundwater table and storage • Precipitation return periods • Identification of depressions – blue spots • Landuse Eionet meeting
Action plan - work in progress and work to come • In december 2012, the Actionplan for a climate proof Denmark was launched. • The plan provides an overview of the initiatives already launched by the government, as well as future initiatives to ensure Denmark's resilience towards more serious precipitation. • A background report has also been published; Mapping climate change – barriers and opportunities for action Eionet meeting

Klik på billede-ikonet og indsæt billede i korrekt størrelse • The action plan emphasises the following five overall focus areas for the government: • Ensure the best possible framework for cca in the municipalities • Ensure a common knowledge base and regularly prepare guidelines on CCA impacts • Coordinate initiatives across authorities, the business community and the general public • Have a focus on growth potential – innovative solutions • Reduce cc impacts at international level Eionet meeting
Public information campaign • In collaboration with a number of partnerd, a campaign aimed at helping the citizens was launched: • Goal is to help the citizens think more about prevention and climate proofing their homes • It offers a free climate change adaptation check of private homes – to prevent flooding. • Several industries are partners in the campaign Eionet meeting
Guidelines for municipalities • By the end of 2013, all 98 municipalities will develop local action plans – pinpointing the local risk of flooding and draw up prioritised action plans for the initiatives. • To support the work a guideline has been prepared • Provides information for the decisionmakers as well as the politicians Eionet meeting
Mobile team • A Climate Change Adaptation mobile team was established in February 2012 in order to secure that every municipality has the necessary guidance to produce the action plan. • Meetings with 58 municipalities • The mobile team has facilitated workshops, held meetings with politicians as well as citizents. Challenges The Portal shall provide information that can be used by the target-groups to make autonomous decisions on adaptation based on authoritative climate data Target groups: need concrete information Which scenario? How much will sea level rise and where? On property level. Information is uncertain, there are data gaps, data might not exist and it is difficult to provide authoritative climate data. It is a huge task to transform climate data into useful concrete information for local authorities to use Information that points to the fact that adaptation is necessary can in the end have large consequences – both economically and in terms of responsibility. Eionet meeting
Challenges • Providing data on extreme precipitation! • Provide methods to identify and prioritize areas at risk – buildings, infrastructure, farms, nature ect… • Digital elevation model Eionet meeting
