  1. Authority – Who Governs us?

  2. Col. 3:17: “And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

  3. “By whatpower or by whatname have you done this”?

  4. 1. Cain learned that the hard way when he did not offer his sacrifice generously with all of his heart! (Gen. 4:5-7, Heb. 11:4) • 2. Nadab and Abihu lost their lives because of a minor adjustment to their offering. (Lev. 10:3) • 3. Saul was rejected by God when he offered a sacrifice he was not authorized to offer. (1 Sam. 13:8-14) • 4. Uzzah was struck dead simply because he touched the ark of the covenant – even though his apparent motive was simply to protect the ark. (II Sam. 6:6-7)

  5. Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. • John 5:27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. • John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: • Matt. 8:9 “For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.”

  6. Matt. 21:23 “And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?” • “What do you mean ‘by what authority’? God does not require us to have authority for what we do in religion as long as we do not violate a direct command.”

  7. Matthew 21:24-27 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one question, which if ye tell me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things. (25) The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven or from men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why then did ye not believe him? (26) But if we shall say, From men; we fear the multitude; for all hold John as a prophet. (27) And they answered Jesus, and said, We know not. He also said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

  8. (1 Cor. 4:6) Now these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes; that in us ye might learn not to go beyond the things which are written; that no one of you be puffed up for the one against the other.

  9. “sacred drama” in the worship services, • Choirs and Solo’s…singing groups, • religious observance of Christmas and Easter, • and instrumental music in worship services that are not found in Scripture!

  10. Genesis 6:14-16 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. (15) And this is how thou shalt make it: the length of the ark three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. (16) A light shalt thou make to the ark, and to a cubit shalt thou finish it upward; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.

  11. 2 Chronicles 31:20-21 And thus did Hezekiah throughout all Judah; and he wrought that which was good and right and faithful before Jehovah his God. (21) And in every work that he began in the service of the house of God, and in the law, and in the commandments, to seek his God, he did it with all his heart, and prospered.

  12. Upon what basis are these innovations justified? • “Well, it meets our needs”. • “It gets more people involved”. • “It brings in lots of people”. • “It generates enthusiasm”. • “We really like it”. • “It stimulates interest.” • “It keeps our young people’s attention”. • “It creates a warm, accepting environment”.

  13. 1 John 3:7 My little children, let no man lead you astray: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous: Acts 10:35 but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is acceptable to him. 2 John 1:9 Whosoever goeth onward and abideth not in the teaching of Christ, hath not God: he that abideth in the teaching, the same hath both the Father and the Son.

  14. 2 Peter 2:20-22 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome, the last state is become worse with them than the first. (21) For it were better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered unto them. (22) It has happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog turning to his own vomit again, and the sow that had washed to wallowing in the mire.

  15. Hebrews 10:26-27 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more a sacrifice for sins, (27) but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and a fierceness of fire which shall devour the adversaries.

  16. Acts 4:12 And in none other is there salvation: for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, wherein we must be saved.
