  1. Comparative Presentation Amanda Billings Color is not important, a person value is

  2. The Color Purple • Celie was a black girl who grew up in Georgia during the slave period • Her only hope was writing letters to god, to be able to feel safe • Grew up with an abusive father • Eager to escape the terror of her home • Began to meet people that she became close with and was able to forget her past

  3. Beloved • Sethe grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio being a slave • Had spirits that haunted the house, thinking it was her dead sister. • Flashbacks that lead to the rest of Sethes' life • Sethes’ child Beloved was only a nightmare

  4. Themes The Color Purple Beloved • Female relationships with other women • Being able to have a voice for what is right • Impact slavery on former slaves • Equality of people • Believing in spirits

  5. Significance • Celie got away from her home and corrupted family life • Started a successful business in tailoring • Took over land from her family • Beloved was only a spirit that stoppedhurtingpeople. • Left her past like it was a bad nightmare.

  6. The big picture behind it all • Slavery was one of the worst time periods to happen in this world and everyone's story should be heard. • The Color Purple was being told from a 14 year old girl who had no choice but to grow up fast and hope to set free. Celie lost all of her family through death or lost connection. • Beloved was another story that people were getting abused and had the only hope that it would eventually end • Sethes’ child “Beloved” became this spirit that only was evil and people only hoped that Beloved would stop haunting them.

  7. In both stories it is shown that both people had a terrible family life growing up into slavery, but the main point that stood out to me was that they made something of themselves no matter how hard they had it. “Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn” -Harriet Beecher Stowe
