The Present Tenses. Present Simple & Continuous. Introduction. In English we distinguish two types of present tenses We use the present simple to describe actions that happen frequently. We use the present continuous to describe actions that are happening at the moment of speaking.

  2. Introduction In English we distinguish two types of present tenses • We use the present simple to describe actions that happenfrequently. • We use the present continuous to describe actions that are happening at the moment of speaking

  3. The Present Simple When the 3rd person singular is used we add an “s” to the verb. She plays football. SUBJECT + verb (infinitive) I play football !

  4. The Present Continuous SUBJECT + am/ is/ are (to be) + verb-ING I am playing football You are playing football He is playing football

  5. Time adverbs: PS • often • everyday • always • frequently • never • sometimes • usually • On Mondays • Once a week, twice a week, three times a week

  6. How to use the adverbs • Subject + Adverb+ verb I usually wake up at 7. • Adverb + subject + verb Sometimes, she goes to the supermarket.

  8. Activity: Simple vs. Continuous You have to complete the sentences using the correct tense: PS or PC. Tricks: • Try to underline the key words (adverbs) • Remember that the verb TO BE in the present simple is: am/ are /is, and that it has no continuous form. We can’t say: “I’m being”
