  2. Generation Y • The generation of people born between 1981-1994 • Other associated names with Gen Y: • Millennial • Echo boomers • Net generation • First digitals • Trophy generation

  3. Characteristics • Adept at multi-tasking • Have a great desire for work/life balance • Comfortable at expressing their feelings • Have good technology skills • Tolerant of diversity and multicultural • Delaying adult responsibilities

  4. Gen Y youths • As they were born in the 80’s-90’s, for them youth would have been from late 90’s to late 2000’s. (1997-2008)

  5. Popular music for Gen Y youths • Popular music in the 1990s saw the continuation of teen pop and dance-pop trends which had emerged in the 1970s and 1980s • Additionally, hip hop, rap, grunge and alternative rock grew and continued to be highly successful in the decade. • E.g. artists such as Eminem, Pearl Jam, Spice Girls, Michael Jackson, Nirvana, Tupac Shakur, Biggie, Snoop Dogg • They differ from today’s music, as rock isn’t as big as it was in that decade, with the development of sound mixers, artists can pretty much make their own sound without a band.

  6. TV and Movies • Popular TV shows and movies include: • (mid 90’s) (2000-2004) • The Simpsons Old school • Friends Donnie Darko • Seinfeld Family Guy • Jurassic park Jackass

Fashion • There were 2 waves of trends in fashion one is the beginning of the rejection of fashion which continued into the 2000s and the beginning of the adoption of tattoos, body piercings aside from ear piercing and to a lesser extent, other forms of body modification such as branding. • This started the deviance from the norm approach to fashion which was popular throughout the 1990s, leading to the popularisation of the casual chic look, including T-shirts, jeans, hoodies, and trainers which continued into the 2000s. .

Health issues • Suicide • Anorexia the 3rd most common chronic illness in females • The Australian Bureau of Statistics' National Health Surveys show that in 1990 the youngest adult males (aged 20 to 24 years) who belonged to Generation X had a mean body mass index of 23.6, but by 2005 Generation Y 20 to 24-year-old registered a BMI of 24.5 - moving closer to 25 (the BMI that heralds overweight).
