  3. What are Math Interactive Notebooks? • A personalized textbook that YOU create • A working portfolio for all of YOUR notes, classwork, etc. -- in one convenient spot

  4. Your Interactive Student Notebook must contain the following aspects:

  5. Let’s Begin • Create a title page for YOUR notebook. This includes your name, homeroom teacher, math teacher. You can illustrating this page. • Number the title page #1. On the back of PAGE #1, number it as PAGE #2. Odd numbers will always on the right side pages, and even numbers will always be on the left. There will be NO blank pages. • Pages are NEVER torn out. Notebooks must be kept neat because YOU will need them to study.

  6. Table of Contents • A reference (I will use this when grading your notebook) • See model… • Is an outline of YOUR notebook and needs to be filled in as you go.

  7. Left Side – Right Side Orientation LEFT SIDE RIGHT SIDE Right side items are items from the teacher . . . Warm Up Notes Foldables CW Practice Handouts Graphic Organizers Book Studies Left side items are items from the student REFLECTING, RESPONDING, and PROCESSING according to the text. 8. ***HOMEWORK can be done on either the right or left hand side (where do you have space).***

  9. Marking Up and Boxing In • Block in the notes, make a line separating this information from other notes • Underline key concepts and circle words you need to know • Draw an arrow to the other side of the notebook and box in • Paraphrase your notes and create your graphics

  10. Graphics/ Student Notes • YOU draw pictures of their notes, create charts, diagrams, cartoons-- whatever YOU want. • The teacher must be able to identify what is being explained. • This allows for various learning styles and allows YOU to be imaginative and creative--experiment!

  16. Tips/Tricks • Tabs can be used to identify Units (if you choose) • Each time you start on a page, list the date, textbook section, and title on the top line. • A new lesson ALWAYS starts with the notebook open full length. Both pages should be empty. • HOMEWORK can be done on either the right or left hand side (where do you have space).

  17. Tips/Tricks • When you finish your work early or have some "free" time, update your table of contents or review your notes by adding color, highlighting, underlining, boxing the important things. • No doodling that doesn’t relate to notes • No ripped out pages or torn corners

  18. Keep it all together with your Interactive Notebook!

  19. Studying with Interactive Notebooks • Read the notes. Marking up and highlighting key concepts helps YOU to focus on main ideas. • Paraphrasing helps YOU to process the information. • Studying the graphics helps YOU to create pictures in YOUR minds. This is a fundamental difference between good and poor readers.

  20. What DOES NOT go in your Notebook? • Blank Copies of Worksheets • Copies of Workbook PAGES (do not tear out of your workbook) • Tests

  21. How is the Notebook graded? • Rubric • ALL PAPERS MUST BE ATTACHED • Conferencing-teacher and peers • Notebooks will be graded randomly throughout class. • It can also be collected for a grade on any quiz or test date. • Notebooks may be collected with or without notice, so…. YOU MUST have YOUR notebook everyday.

  22. Notebook Rubric • Notebook grades will be based on: • VISUAL APPEARANCE / ORGANIZATION (30) • Table of Contents • Work is Neat and Organized • Headings and Dates on all Pages • Effective Use of Color • All Papers Attached • QUALITY AND COMPLETENESS (70) • Notes and right-side work is complete and of high quality…answered thoroughly • Left-side work is complete and shows processing/reflecting of the work done on the right side….additional thoughts included. • Evidence of following instructions. • No missing work (even if you were absent). • EXTRAS (10) • Obvious evidence of time invested • Obvious evidence of learning. • Effort and quality of work are exceptional. • Newspaper cute outs, articles.

  23. Remember… • Student work is recorded in an interactive notebook • Students are required to bring the notebook EVERY DAY • Notebooks should be well cared for, so they can last throughout the school YEAR
