  6. Why Cultural Heritage?Source: https://europa.eu/cultural-heritage/about_en • Cultural heritage has a universal value for us as individuals, communities and societies. It is important to preserve and pass on to future generations. You may think of heritage as being ‘from the past’ or static, but it actually evolves though our engagement with it. What is more, our heritage has a big role to play in building the future of Europe.

Formsofculturalheritage • tangible – for example buildings, monuments, artefacts, clothing, artwork, books, machines, historic towns, archaeological sites. • intangible – practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, skills - and the associated instruments, objects and cultural spaces - that people value. This includes language and oral traditions, performing arts, social practices and traditional craftsmanship. • natural – landscapes, flora and fauna. • digital – resources that were created in digital form (for example digital art or animation) or that have been digitalised as a way to preserve them (including text, images, video, records).

Opinion essay structure • OPENING PARAGRAPH • give a very brief introduction to the chosen example of cultural heritage (4-6 sentences) • explain your thesis / the statement clearly and give your opinon about it → THE MAIN IDEA OF YOUR ESSAY / THE POINT YOU ARE TAKING TO MAKE OR PROVE • includes: thesis statement and the reason(s) why you believe this statement is true • BODY (thelongestpart 2-3 paragraphs) • convince the readerandgive specific reasons and facts to support your opinion • presentyourviewpointsanddevelopyourarguments • each paragraph should contain a single, clear idea explainedin more detail • backup youropinionwith documentation by refering to your photo • CONCLUSION • sumupyour argument and restate yourthesisstatement & opinion • remindthe reader what your reasons were OPINION ESSAY CHECKLIST

  13. YOUR HERITAGE ESSAY: TOPIC: Our heritage: Where the past meets the future SUBTITLE: Example of ............. (e.g. Franjo Krežma statue in Osijek or Spirit of Imperium Romanum in Kopačevo) - students should choose any example of cultural heritage in Osijek or their hometown) • After the title of your essay you should insert a self-made photo of cultural heritage site / attraction / traditional craftsmanship.... • Format and Length:Essays must be typed, and contain between 200 and 250 words • Originality and Plagiarism:Essays must be written in the student’s own words. Any submissions copied in whole or part from the Internet or other sources will be disqualified.

At the end of your essay: QR Code with embedded audio / video • Record a 30-second video / audio file (e.g.using Vocaroo), save the file and embed it into a QR code  insert the QR code at the end of your essay (video / audio files have to uploaded to Google Drive and shared: engleskiefos@gmail.com) • In your recording give your view of importance of cultural heritage and cover some of the following issues (questions are here to guide you, you do not have to answer literally) - What role does heritage play in building connections between the past and the future? - What can we discover through cherishing our cultural heeritage? - Why is is important to raise awareness and develop connections with our cultural heritage? - How can we trigger real change in the way we enjoy, protect and promote heritage, making sure that we benefitin the longer term?
