Why is the GD used to screen candidates • The GD provides employers an opportunity to evaluate potential employees’ communication skills • Interpersonal skills are a key part of employee evaluation at Performance Appraisals • Effective communication is required at all levels of the organization • With team members, managers and customers • “The first impression is the last impression”

  3. What skills are evaluated during GD? • How good you are at communication with others • How you behave and interact with group • How open minded are you • Your listening skills • How you put forward your views • Your leadership and decision making skills • Your analytical skill and subject knowledge • Problem solving and critical thinking • Your attitude and confidence

  4. Eye contact • Keep eye contact while speaking • Do not look at the evaluators • Try to keep eye contact with every, or almost every team member while speaking • Initiate the GD • Initiating the GD is a big plus • Initiate the GD only when you understand the GD topic clearly and have some topic knowledge • Speaking without proper subject knowledge and preparation can result in a poor impression Do’s and Don’ts of GD

Allow others to speak • Do not interrupt anyone while they are speaking • Even if you don’t agree with his/her thoughts do not snatch their chance to speak • Instead make some notes and clear the points when it’s your turn • Speak clearly and logically • Speak politely and clearly • Use simple and understandable words while speaking • Express your opinion calmly and with reason Do’s and Don’ts of GD

Bring the discussion on track • If the group is distracting from the topic or goal, take initiative to bring the discussion on the track • Make all group members aware that you all need to come to some conclusion at the end of the discussion • Stick to the allocated time • Positive attitude • Be confident, but not aggressive • Use positive gestures and body language, and show an interest in the discussion Do’s and Don’ts of GD

Listen carefully to others • Speak less and listen more! • Pay attention while others are speaking • Do not go into much details • Some basic subject analysis is sufficient • Do not mention facts and figures while giving any reference • You have limited time so be precise and convey your thoughts in short and simple language • Formal dressing • Do not dress too casually, or too fancy • Wear smart casuals, or if a dress code is specified, stick to that Do’s and Don’ts of GD
