  1. Sermon • Luke 11:1-4 • Our Father In Heaven • Introduction

  2. – LEAD WITH AFFECTION – Our Father… • We long for a Father, a Papa, and through Jesus we have one. His name is God, Yahweh. The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is God in the flesh. And He rejoices over us with singing – Zeph 3

  3. “To all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God.” (John 1:12) • Prayer to God as Father is for Christians only, and it is a privilege that we should embrace with joy.

  4. Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say:

  5. “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.” (Luke 11:1-4 ESV)

  6. What is proper basis for prayer? • How to use adoption in prayer. • How to use Father in petition.

  7. What is proper basis for prayer? • It is our privilege as beloved adopted children of God. • This privilege means that we are heirs with Christ. We are no longer strangers and aliens.

  8. Heidelberg Catechism # 120 • Q. Why has Christ commanded us to address God as Our Father?A. At the very beginning of our prayer Christ wants to kindle in us what is basic to our prayer- that childlike reverence and trust that God has become our Father through Christ.

  9. WHAT is a Christian? J.I. Packer • ‘If you want to judge how well a person understands Christianity, find out how much he makes of the thought of being God’s child, and having God as his Father. If this is not the thought that prompts and controls his worship and prayers

  10. and his whole outlook on life, it means that he does not understand Christianity very well at all. For everything that Christ taught, … is summed up in the knowledge of the Fatherhood of God. “Father” is the Christian name for God.’

  11. The P-A-P-A PRAYER • Crabb – Power (confidence and boldness) in petition depends on depth of relationship with God.

  12. Heidelberg #121 • Q. Why is there added, Who art in heaven? • A. These words teach us not to think of God's heavenly majesty in an earthly manner, and to expect from His almighty power all things we need for body and soul.

  13. A.W. Pink, in reference to God as Father, who is in heaven says, … • These are the two things that should ever occupy our minds and engage our hearts: the first (our father) without the second tends toward unholy familiarity; the second without the first produces coldness and dread.

  14. By combining them together, we are preserved from both evils; and a suitable balance is …maintained in the soul as we duly contemplate both the mercy and might of God, His unfathomable love and His immeasurable loftiness.

  15. You can approach God on a business basis or family basis and prayer reveals the approach we take. • If things aren’t going well and you get angry or guilty you prove you’re a renter, not a child. At heart, your relationship with God is a business one.

  16. The Christian says “God come in and be my father. I’m not worthy but Christ is all for me. On the basis of what he has done, be my Father” • Knowing God as Father, a father who loves, forgives and accepts us in Jesus brings freedom and healing in our hearts, and it draws our hearts to him in prayer.

  17. How to use Adoption • Start prayer with adoption. That is the thing that makes the throne of the universe a throne of grace.

  18. Pagans can’t pray like Christians, but Christians can pray like pagans when we fall back into an orphan / business relationship with God.

  19. HOW TO USE “OUR FATHER” IN PETITION • One bit of Bible prayed over, and bedewed with the Spirit, and made alive, though it be only a short sentence of six words, will profit you more than a hundred chapters without the Spirit. – Charles Spurgeon

  20. The ABC’s of coming to faith – • A - Admit that you’re weak and need grace and strength – That means there is GOOD NEWS FOR YOU   • B- Believe that Jesus is the only savior who can heal your heart. • C- confess to God that you want to trust Jesus as your savior and Lord
