  1. AP Exam Final Checklist (a confidence booster)

  2. Multiple Choice • Read the passages in their entirety PRIOR to reading questions and answers • If a QUESTION seems too difficult, try to move on to another and come back to that question • Look for “detail” questions to give hints to the “overall meaning” questions • Notice patterns • Go with your gut, with the most commonly accepted idea • Watch out for EXCEPT questions • Don’t overthink things • Review terms to feel more prepared • Review past practice exam questions • Pace yourself

  3. Open-Ended Essay • See my website for comprehensive review guide for this essay • Review 5 novels • Answer the prompt directly in your writing- use the language of the prompt throughout the essay • Be PRECISE (“a”=1) and specific in your references • Feel free to use other literary devices or techniques in your discussion to build a strong literary analysis • Refer to AUTHOR and TITLE in your introductory paragraph • Cover the SCOPE of the novel (don’t leave out major plot points) but relate all details to the prompt’s focus

  4. Poetry Essays • Read the poem 2 times if possible, once to identify speaker and situation, once for technical analysis • Prepare and organize ideas with annotations • Try to use 3 supportive points, the “jackpot” is to incorporate POETRY-SPECIFIC techniques (sound, structure) • Explain not just WHAT is there but WHY it is being used/ effective in conveying tone or theme • Refer often to the text itself to balance your discussion with evidence and commentary • Let’s Review ON THE SUBWAY by Olds’

  5. PROSE Essays • Read the passage carefully and annotate as you go, looking for key terms suggested in the prompt among others • Think about the purpose of the passage, why is the author taking the time to develop this content? • Analyze a minimum of 3 things, including mostly stylistic decisions (point of view, syntax, details, diction, imagery, characterization techniques)- WORDS, ACTIONS, PHYSICAL DESCRIPTIONS, THOUGHTS, DIRECT DETAIL, MOOD OR ATMOSPHERE, CLASS OR STATUS OF CHARACTER • Relate details to thematic overview or purpose of passage • Let’s review “We Were The Mulvaneys” or “The Other Paris”

  6. Comparative poetry • What IF this happens? Well, do the same thing you did for regular poetry, but consider “the whole package” • Use similarities and differences, whether obvious or subtle, as a basis for your discussion • What is the EFFECT of differences? What are the different EFFECTS of similarities? • Consider subject provided in the prompt carefully • Organize as compare/contrast or like a normal poetry essay by technique, but use evidence from both sources in your paragraphs • Form an argumentative thesis that states “while this poem does this, the other poem does that” or “the two poems consider the topic in their own ways, but together consider the issue of this theme”
