Different Types Of Horses • Horses are loosely divided into three major categories. • These divisions are normally based on the general temperament of the horses. • Hot Bloods • Spirited animals. • Built for speed & endurance. • Cold Bloods • Best suited for slow, heavy work. • Large horses, and some ponies. • Warm Bloods • Cross breeds between hot bloods & cold bloods. • Bred for specific riding purposes. There are currently over 300 different breeds of horses all over the world today, each bred for different uses.

  5. Anatomy • There are an average of 205 bones in a horse’s body. • Significant difference in our skeletal system & a horse’s is their lack of a collarbone. • They have no muscles below the knees and hocks. • Only the special tissues, etc. that make up the hooves.

  7. Other Benefits to Humans • Horses also benefit humans by the raw materials that they produce. • Horse meat • Used for humans in the past, and for other carnivorous animals. • Horsehide • Boots, gloves, jackets, baseballs, etc. • Horse hooves • Used to produce glue.

  8. Specific Horse Breeds

Thoroughbred Horse • Breed originated in 17th-18th century England. • Best known for horse racing. • Also competes in show jumping, eventing, dressage at highest levels of competition. • Considered a “hot blood” horse. • For their agility, speed, and spirit. • Have a very high rate of accidents and other health problems. • 1/10 of Thoroughbreds suffer some type of orthopedic problem.

Arabian Horse • Originated on the Arabian Peninsula. • One of the oldest known breeds, according to archaeological evidence. • The distinct shape of their head has been found in bones that date back around 4,500 years. • Versatile breed • Well known for endurance riding and other fields of equestrian activity. • Classified as “hot blooded”. • Six genetic disorders are common for the breed.

American Quarter Horse Nicknamed~ “America’s Horse”& “World’s Fastest Horse” • American breed of horse. • Excels at sprinting short distances. • Their breed name originated this way. • From their ability to outdistance opponents in quarter mile races. • Well known for appearing in rodeos, as show horses, and also as working ranch horses.

  12. Paints & Pintos American Paint Horse Pinto Known simply as “coloured” horses in nations using British English. Most popular in the United States. Several types: Piebald Skewbald Tricolored or Tricoloured • Developed from Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred bloodlines. • Different “paint” patterns: • Tobiano • Overo • Frame • Sabino • Splashed White • Tovero
