  4. Cont. • There are approximately 5.5 million horses in the US today, and increasing • The most popular breeds, the American Quarter Horse, Thoroughbred, Standard bred, Appaloosa, and Arabian. • Horses account for $16 billion to the US economy.

  5. Cont. • Texas has the largest number of horses • Minnesota is in the top 10 • Racing, rodeos, and horse competitions (reining, showing, cutting, ect) are major spectator sports related to horses.

  6. Horse Cost • Initial Purchase Price- ranges from $100-$10,000 depending on age, ability, pedigree, and training • Yearly cost includes-feed, shots ( tetanus, influenza, encephalitis, west Nile), worming (2-3 times annually), hoof care(3-6 times a year), and general care(fly spray, brushes, ect.) • About $800-$1000/year

  7. Health Management • Average temperature- 99-100.5 degrees F • Pulse Rate- 36-40 beats per minute • Gestation- 330-340 days • Heat cycle- 21 days • Hooves grow .2” per month • A Foals teeth will appear in the first 1-2 wks

  8. General Information Cont. • Young male-colt • Young female-filly • Young horse-foal • Castrated male horse- gelding • Horses including- ponies, mules, burros, and donkeys.

  9. Cont. • Pony- 14.2 hands or less and weigh 500-900 pounds • Donkey/Burro- own subspecies • Mule- cross between a male donkey and a female horse • Jennet/Hinny- cross between a male horse and female donkey • A hand is equal to 4” 15.1 hand = 61”
