  2. Imperialism • The domination by one country of the political, economic, or cultural life of another country or region. • Took place in the 1500s and 1600s • Based on the settlement of colonies through conquest and annexation • Ex. American colonies

  3. New Imperialism • European powers worked to directly govern large areas occupied by non-European peoples (Africa & Asia) • Took place from 1870 to 1914 • New forms of control were used, including protectorates and spheres of influence • Ex. The Scramble for Africa

Causes of New Imperialism • Economic Interests • Related to industrialization and the need for raw materials to manufacture goods • Political & Military interests • Rivalry between European nations created competition over establishing colonies • Nationalism caused leaders to create global empires to increase their power

  5. Causes of New Imperialism • Social/Cultural Interests • Racist beliefs that Europeans were superior (Social Darwinism) • Desire to spread European style of government, customs, and Christian values • Technological Advancements • Medical knowledge, advances in weaponry and overseas travel
