  1. AP Chemistry

  2. Introduction • This course is designed to be the equivalent of a first year college chemistry course • Objective is to obtain a score of 3 or better on the AP Exam given in May • Score of 3 or above qualifies the student for college credit at most universities

  3. Objectives • Understand basic components of matter and how they create all the different forms that exist • Be able to apply chemical concepts to everyday life • Be able to perform mathematical calculations pertaining to chemistry

  4. Be able to use logic and critical thinking skills to solve problems – Scientific Method • Safely utilize appropriate laboratory techniques in testing scientific hypothesis

  5. Grading • Grades based on tests (~70%), labs (~20%) and homework (~10%)

  6. Classroom Rules • Be respectful • Be prepared • Follow all safety rules and teacher directions

  7. Materials Needed • Textbook • Calculator • Pen and pencil • Notebook with paper • Spiral notebook for labs

  8. Where did Chemistry begin? • Came out of practice of alchemy – attempt to change common substances into more valuable elements such as silver and gold

  9. Chemistry - The Study of Matter • Properties of matter • Color • Hardness • Melting point • Boiling point • Density

  10. Structure and Composition of Matter • What are the atomic and subatomic components of the material and how do they fit together

  11. Changes Matter can undergo • Physical Change - Change in form but not in material structure

  12. Chemical Change • Change in composition of materials
