Developing a Model to Reduce and/or Prevent Cybercrime Victimization among the User Individuals, Pg. 258 • Cyber crime is growing and current technical models to tackle cyber crime are inefficient in stemming the increase in cyber crime. This serves to indicate that further preventive strategies are required in order to reduce cyber crime. Just as it is important to understand the characteristics of the criminals in order to understand the motivations behind the crime and subsequently develop and deploy crime prevention strategies; it is also important to understand victims i.e the characteristics of the users of computer systems in order to understand the way these users fall victim to cyber crime. • There is currently very little literature on reduction and/or prevention of cyber crime victimization among user individuals. That is, what makes each victim vulnerable, and how the cyber crime prevention strategies should be adapted according to the unique characteristics of the victim. Therefore, by looking at the traditional crime prevention theories, models and victims characterisations it is possible to identify synergies in that can be adopted in the development of cyber crime prevention and/or reduction model.

Developing a Model to Reduce and/or Prevent Cybercrime Victimization among the User Individuals, Pg. 258 • Efforts to reduce and/or prevent cybercrime victimization among user individuals have put the technology first and concentrate on protecting computers and devices with the hope that the users will not fall victim to cybercrime. These technical interventions differ significantly from mainstream crime prevention models that focus on the human element in crime. The field of criminology is yet to catch up with the explosion of the Internet and cybercrimes.

Developing a Model to Reduce and/or Prevent Cybercrime Victimization among the User Individuals, Pg. 258 • Jahankhaniand Askerniya (2012) recently proposed a grid model for classifying cybercrime prevention strategies along four different dimensions (Figure 21.2). These include (axis X) the level of “Tech-savviness,” (axis Y) individuals at different levels of risk, (axis Z) the cognitive developmental stages of the individuals, and (idea/theme axis) the prevention program goal. • This model considers social aspects as an important element within crime prevention techniques and link education and awareness as a key player in crime reduction.
