  1. Olympic College Advising Center (Bremerton Campus) Zhian Haji

  2. Placement • I will be completing my practicum at the advising center at Olympic College. I use to be a student there and always appreciated the help I got when I would walk in

  3. Mission Statement Olympic College Mission Statement: We serve and enrich all our communities by providing quality education and training for all who seek to improve their lives through learning.

  4. Agency Size (2010-2011) • Student Annual Headcount (2010-2011): 14,617 • Faculty and Staff (2011): • Full-time Faculty 113 • Adjunct Faculty 269 • Administrative Staff 59 • Classified Staff 161 • Classified Staff, Part-time 240 • Student Employees 204 • TOTAL 1,046 • “Students who have declared a particular major, program or certificate are referred to faculty advisors who are available to review and approve education plans, discuss students' ongoing progress and complete applications for graduation if applicable. Students who are undecided can meet with a counselor for help deciding on an educational goal.” • There are many advisers at OC and they are listed by program

  5. Location • Olympic College has an advising center at each of its three campuses in Bremerton, Poulsbo, and Shelton Bremerton location: Humanities & Student Services Bldg., Room 203 1600 Chester Avenue, Bremerton, WA 98337

  6. Service-Delivery Models • The advising center provides services to students and potential students • Advisers review and approve education plans, discuss students' ongoing progress and complete applications for graduation if applicable, and help students decide on an educational goal

  7. Practicum Role and Responsibilities • The advising center has had previous interns from Western, so they are familiar with the whole process • My roles and responsibilities at the center are broad, from helping at the front desk, helping students with educational goals, and of course completing my learning objectives and more! • Learning Objective #1:Increase knowledge of the advising process and the roles of an adviser • Discuss with supervisor roles of adviser • Observe a minimum of 5 advising sessions • Develop professional relationships with students and staff • Learning Objective #2: Understand and demonstrate ethical and professional behavior: • Meet three times with supervisor to assess strengths and areas for professional development • Discuss ethics and common ethical issues that arise with supervisor at least twice during the quarter • Identify at least three NOHS standards that you do not currently understand or would like to know more about and identify up to five ways these standards may apply in your scope of work • Identify and document at least 10 policies, procedures, or operational practices that help agency stakeholders (staff, volunteers, etc) make ethical and professional choices

  8. What are you most excited about? • Overall I am more excited than I am concerned/nervous. I am looking forward to putting what I have learned to practice and really to just get out into the field. I look forward to learning and growing as a human service professional

  9. Concerns/Worries • I think my biggest concern is “messing up” and being given a task or project and either doing it wrong or having absolutely no idea what to do. • However, I know that if I ever have any concerns when interning I can always talk with my field supervisor. He has been very supporting through the whole process of finalizing my placement and I know he will be equally supportive during the actual internship.
