  3. Sample POV on 2006 DBQ • Doc. 1: As the cofounder of a national gymnastics organization of Czech people – people who did NOT have their own homeland independent of the Austrian empire, Tyrs would be especially concerned about creating a race strong enough to fight against “foreigners.” • Doc. 2: Numbers jump drastically during the period of extreme nationalism in Austria – this was one way to express their otherwise repressed national identity. • Doc. 3: Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts, writes in his manual “scouting for boys” that playing sports is good, though watching is not. His organization was created for the purpose of making boys tough – playing sports would accomplish that. • Doc. 6: Clearly gov. propaganda designed to encourage men to join the military as it is like a “game” =- sports were popular – use them to persuade young men. • Doc. 8: As a Soviet physician, he stresses the health benefits of sport to improve the fledgling Soviet state – recently stabilized after civil war. • Doc. 10: As a doctor, Profe emphasizes the lack of scientific evidence for the need for different exercises for women. As a woman, she has an interest in promoting equality justified by her expertise – clearly she is a woman who is comfortable enough to pursue an atypical female career.
