  2. Key Terms • Free State- State that doesn’t allow slavery • Slave State- State that allows slavery • Manifest Destiny- The belief that someday America will reach from Atlantic to Pacific.

  3. After the War • War was essentially a tie, but Americans claimed victory. • Andrew Jackson is an American hero. • James Monroe is elected President.

  4. James Monroe’s Presidency • 3 Big Things • Taking Florida • Missouri Compromise • Monroe Doctrine

  5. New Inventions • Steam Engine- James Watt • Cotton Gin- Eli Whitney • Textile (Clothing) Manufacturing in New England.

  6. Taking Florida • Runaway slaves started heading to Florida. • (Remember Florida is owned by Spain still) • Andrew Jackson sent to Florida to push around the Seminole and Spanish living there. • Nasty fighter, just like the Indians. • Spain is too weak to fight back, sells Florida. • Seminole are forced to swampland.

  7. Missouri Compromise • Cotton was king in the South. • Missouri wanted to join the country as a slave state. But some people were scared of not having a good balance of slave and free states. • Missouri came in as slave, Maine came in as free. • To the West, everything below Missouri would be slave, everything above would be free.

  8. Monroe Doctrine • Told Europeans that we wouldn’t let them make new colonies in the Americas.

  9. Election of 1824 Jerk • John Quincy Adams vs. Andrew Jackson • Both said mean things about the other’s mom. • JQA wins • JQA was absolutely no fun to be around.
