  3. Child, Youth and School ServicesYouth Leadership ForumTradition in a World of Innovation Pacific Region Top 5 Teen Issues • Issue: There are insufficienteducational resources and college preparation opportunities • Issue Description: Youth Centers in the Pacific Region do not have sufficient textbooks and study materials. Current Youth Center materials are not synched with the school’s curriculum. • Recommended Solution: - Require more frequent communication between the school and the CYSS Services School Liaison Officer in order to match Youth Center textbooks to the local school’s curriculum. - Create and issue a textbook request system where students can ask for specific college preparation materials and school books. - Offer SAT preparation courses through the school and/or Youth Centers for students.

  4. Child, Youth and School ServicesYouth Leadership ForumTradition in a World of Innovation Pacific Region Top 5 Teen Issues • Issue: One car allowed during PCS • Issue Description: Families are only allowed to have one car transported to their next duty station. • Recommended Solution: - Allow multiple vehicles to be transported to the new destination. - Provide transportation options to get from point A to B when in-processing. - Provide a discount depending on the number of family members.

  5. Child, Youth and School ServicesYouth Leadership ForumTradition in a World of Innovation Pacific Region Top 5 Teen Issues • Issue: Separate space for teens • Issue Description: Teens currently share facilities with the middle school students creating an environment that produces conflict and prevents teens from participating in activities that are age appropriate to them. • Recommended Solution: Separate buildings for teens or add on to the existing facility. A room in the Youth Center could be transformed into a teen room. Designated times can be made for when middle schoolers and teens are allowed. Teen nights or special events can be held for high school students only.

  6. Child, Youth and School ServicesYouth Leadership ForumTradition in a World of Innovation Pacific Region Top 5 Teen Issues • Issue: Lack of Driver Education • Issue Description: Teens lack the opportunity to receive sufficient education in driving, which hinders their ability to transition from overseas installations to life in the United States. • Recommended Solution: - Create a standardized driver education curriculum in schools that offer both classroom learning and road driving experiences. - Provide all garrisons with driving simulators in order to present students with hands-on driving experience. -Create a standardized system or certification that would allow adult volunteers to mentor students and give them the experience of driving on the road.

  7. Child, Youth and School ServicesYouth Leadership ForumTradition in a World of Innovation Pacific Region Top 5 Teen Issues • Issue: Teen unemployment at overseas installations • Issue Description: The HIRED! apprenticeship program has not been running since January 2014. • Recommended Solution: - Bring back the HIRED! program as soon as possible. - Once the program is reinstated, push the garrisons to partner with more organizations on the installation (i.e. veterinary clinics, hospitals, etc.)
