Why did the Revolution Happen? • British were unfair and harsh • It was just time to break away • The colonists were a bunch of selfish rebels • It really wasn’t a revolution, it was just a war for independence 60% 8% 12% 20%
Before Britain gets all up in the Colonists bis-nass, things are going pretty well… Why Britain? In the 1600s….Enlightenment Thinking… Colonists began to question why Britain ruled them the way they did Colonists start to think on their own/challenge authority SO 1700s Britain Enacts Salutary Neglect • Britain lets the colonists run their land and governs from afar. * Colonists LOVE running the show…start to get used to it. Before Britain gets all up in the Colonists bis-nass, things are going pretty well… • The standard of living in the colonies was among the highest in the world. • There was an abundance of land to be had. • Since things were so good in England, they were used to governing themselves • The main threats to the colonists (French and Indians) had been removed Isn’t life grand, dear? ggjjjeeaahhh
Britain smacks the crap out of the French and N.A. • 1754-1763 • Many colonists fight alongside the British and are even trained by them! • George Washington made a name for himself Here I am world!
What were the effects of the F & I War? • Britain gets a ton of land! • Removes the threat from the West! • BUT…wars cost money • Video

Now that the war was over the colonists began viewing the Mother Country a little differently • 1st of all, England was now broke from fighting this long war and they needed money. They wanted the 2 million colonists to pay 1/3 of the costs • They decided to end “salutary neglect” • i.e. they started enforcing the laws. Show me the Money Brit is like Cuba Gooding Jr… Colonists are like Tom Cruise….
This pisses off some of the colonists…but who cares if you piss off a colonist? STAMP ACT 1765 You must purchase a stamp for EVERYTHING “You’re paying for nothing” Colonists HATE King’s Office Holders
The colonists really start getting frustrated as more taxes are enacted… • Form the “sons of liberty” • video • Develop “non-importation agreements” which really hurt British merchants • Coin the phrase “No taxation without representation.” • But that was sort of a sham • Notice the “enlightenment thinking” here

The Colonists Want REVENGE Boston Tea Party 1773 • Colonists must purchase tea from East India Tea Company. • ACTUALLY… the tax was a mere 3 pence for a pound…barely anything…the tea was actually cheaper now! • Sam & Sons of Liberty (i.e. smugglers) dress as Indians & throw 15,000 lbs of tea into the harbor. • $3 million dollars today
