  3. Map • Using the map (previous slide) explain where the Shinyanga district is located. • What will the weather be like here? • Explain the areas accessibility. • With these things in mind make a generalisation about what this area would be like to live in.

  4. Shinyanga • The second largest and one of the poorest of Tanzania’s 25 political districts • Population: 2,796,630 • 1000-1500 metres above sea level. What effect will this have on Agriculture? • Is this in contrast with Dar Es Salaam?

Features • Soil: Heavily desertified area due to over stocking and deforestation. • When water is available cash crops can be grown in some areas. • Vegetation and Wildlife: Trees were cut for firewood which wiped out animals. Further deforestation occurred when they tried to get rid of the local Tsetse fly population (causes sleeping sickness in peeps and animals). • Nine Thousands kilometres of forest were felled in two years. As people received incentives of free oxygen, sheep and no taxes.
