  4. UNC System Minimum Admission Requirements (MAR) Starting in the Fall of 2013, students admitted to the UNC system will show a minimum of 2.5 high school GPA and at least 800 on the SAT or 17 on the ACT Private colleges may have different admission requirements. Students should consult college websites for additional information.

  11. Cost The average tuition and fees at NC’s independent colleges and universities is $25,596 which is well below the national average. NCICU 2014 Data

Did you know? • Institutional aid is a major component of awards programs at private colleges and universities. • Independent colleges and universities in North Carolina provided more than $613 million in institutional aid in 2014-2015, • More than 90% of the students on some campuses receive financial aid. • North Carolina students at independent colleges and universities receive more than $84.4 million in need-based financial aid from the state. • 50% of NC students at NCICU campuses receive federal Pell Grants.   15. How to research colleges • CFNC.org • Collegeboard.com • College visits (2 excused absences- get the form from Ms. Munford in advance) • College & Military Reps on campus – see DAB and Twitter (sign up with Mr. Rudder) • Mr. Rudder’s office

  16. After my research – then what? • Apply electronically & pay application fee • When do I apply? DEADLINES • Request and send transcript electronically • Send official test scores from testing agencies - (AP, SAT, ACT)

The Application Online Applications • NC (www.cfnc.org) • College/University Websites (most end in “.edu”) • Common Application ( ~700 member schools) • www.commonapp.org Content and cost of applications vary • List of activities and the time involved in each • If students have used a SAT/ACT fee waiver then they are eligible for a College Application fee waiver

The Application, continued Requirements may vary: • Essays – “an interview on paper” • Recommendations –Follow directions • Teacher Rec - Core teacher(s) – Junior year • Politely request far ahead of deadline • Secondary School Report also known as Counselor Rec • Give 2 weeks lead time Interview Deadlines vary – Submit before deadlines!

Testing Scores - SAT/ACT • SAT/ACT scores must be sent directly from testing agency • Register on line: • www.collegeboard.org • www.act.org • Select 4 colleges to receive scores when registering for free • Charges for all other scores ($11-15) • When do results come back? • How do colleges get scores – who sends it? • How to cancel a score • Accommodations – require a separate submission many weeks ahead for consideration (through Mr. Sauls) • SAT/ACT fee waivers- see Mr. Sauls

Official Transcript – Fall 2017 • Updated official GPA/Rank for seniors will run on the 20th day of school, September 26th. • Counselors will pass out rank and gpa to students during lunch on Sept 27th, outside the auditorium. Directions for sending Transcripts: • In state • Transcript will be sent by the student through CFNC.org account. • Check your profile to make sure your name is spelled correctly, the same way it appears on your report card/transcript and that your student ID number is entered in. If you do not remember your log in or do not have one, see your counselor. Do NOT create a new account. These transcripts are free of charge.

  21. Official Transcripts • Out of state • Go to https://wcpss.scriborder.com/. Click on Request Transcripts and Student Records, click on All Other Requests and follow prompts. First three requests are free. After the third request, transcripts will cost $5. Payment through website. • Common App • Student must invite their counselor to be a recommender and they will send your transcript. These transcripts are free of charge. • Scholarship & College Coaches • Students need to fill out the GREEN Request for Transcript Authorization Form (available in Student Services or the Broughton website under “Forms”). Our registrar, Ms. Wall will mail your official transcript. These transcripts are free of charge.

  22. Review the Process • Apply electronically & pay • Ask recommenders well in advance of deadlines • Meet or beat deadlines • Take the SAT or ACT and have scores sent • Send transcripts • Use your resources!

Playing for College: NCAA Eligibility Center • MUST register on line ($80) • http://web1.ncaa.org/ECWR2/NCAA_EMS/NCAA.jsp • Mr. Newton will send the transcript once you register • Must send SAT scores directly from College Board; use code: 9999 • Everyone expecting to play sports at the college level must register • Rules for athletes (16 core courses)

Senior Exam Exemptions *All students are required to take NC mandated exams (EOC, NCFE and CTE Post-Assessment) Seniors can be exempt from final exams for non-state mandated courses if: • No more than 3 excused absences and earn an “A” • No more than 2 excused absences and earn a “B” • No more than 1 excused absence and earn a “C” *Students must have no unexcused absences

Reminders • Work hard for good grades • Explore colleges and jobs before applying in order to set realistic goals • Meet deadlines! • Go to homecoming • Read the DAB daily & check the Scholarship Bulletin • Help with Queen of Hearts and go to the dance! • COMPLETE COMMUNITY SERVICE by March 2, 2018 • Have a safe and fun senior year (in that order!) • Inoculate now against senioritis 
