AIM: SWBAT explain why some plants are carnivorous and describe the three main types of carnivorous plants Please Do Now: 1) What is the name of the organ in parasitic plants that penetrates into the xylem and the phloem to steal sugar and nutrients? 2) How is CAM photosynthesis different from normal photosynthesis?

  3. What are Carnivorous Plants? • Carnivorous Plants are those that consume animal tissue • They still photosynthesize, and have all the normal plant parts

  4. Why are they carnivorous? • Carnivorous plants are almost exclusively found in very low nutrient soil (typically bogs/swamps) • Since they can’t get adequate mineral nutrition (particularly Nitrogen) from the soil, they get it from the bodies of their prey

  5. How? • Most non-aquatic carnivorous plants fall into 1 of 3 categories • Pitfall Traps • Snap Traps • Flypaper Traps

  6. Pitfall Traps • Pitfall Traps are carnivorous plants that have modified leaves that form a pit • The pit is filled with liquid • The insect is attracted to the rim of the pit by a sweet smell • It then falls in and can’t get out • The liquid slowly digests them with enzymes and acids

  7. Snap Traps • The leaves are in an open position • A fly touching TWO hairs on the inside of the trap will cause it to close • The hair movement triggers an electrical signal sent down tubes, which opens ion channels on the membranes of cells on the outside of the trap, causing water to flow into them rapidly via osmosis, closing the leaf • Once it catches its prey, it secrets enzymes to digest it

  9. Flypaper Traps • Traps with a very sticky substance that bugs that land on and cannot escape from • Lures its prey with the promise of sugar • Once they are stuck their, its leaves slowly curl around it and envelop it, secreting digestive juices to dissolve the body
