Do you need a complete turnkey program? IEM specializes in the design of automation equipment, fabrication, integration of complex components, installation and start up of simple and complex systems. IEM has an experienced staff to design and fabricate custom control panels and make upgrades to existing equipment.

IEM can supply the people for as long as you need them. How comprehensive is the Electrical group? IEM can take a motor control project from an idea or design, prepare a wiring diagram, determine the components for the enclosure and complete a fully automatic control system for a variety of commercial or industrial applications.

Management’s Role in Driving an Unsuccessful Maintenance Organization… politics…disjointed organizational goals…no/poor objectives IEM knows and understands that maintenance is a process driven by: disciplined thoughts and disciplined actions by disciplined people. Companies are still very much stuck in the rut of reactive maintenance. Why is this so? Because the business processes have failed to keep pace with the rapidly moving technologies.

  29. Plant Manager’s Role for a Successful Maintenance Program The plant manager must create an inter-department working environment in which maintenance can succeed. Plant managers must make production responsible for effective use of maintenance services and hold it accountable. Production’s Role for a Successful Maintenance Program A production department that fails to make equipment available to maintenance for necessary scheduled maintenance so it can meet its production targets undermines overall plant performance. Maintenance Manager’s Role Many feel that a maintenance supervisor with 20 years experience must know what he is about. Yet, the incumbent supervisor, while he means well and is conscientious, may still think the same way he did as a craftsman. “Making the equipment run again” may be his primary objective.

  30. Key Notes for Maintenance Managers: The maintenance team must generate corrective maintenance tasks off the PM’s they perform. Understand that undisciplined maintenance resource management will not change anything. Another obstacle to maintenance success is the traditional image of maintenance professionals--often viewed as "grease monkeys." To help change this external perception, maintenance professionals need to correct some of their own views that perpetuate this negative view of their profession. Most inspections are completed while equipment is operating because we do not want to waste valuable shutdown/offline time on inspections that could be done on the run.

  31. HOW can we fix your program? 1. Hiring process we use thoroughly screens all prospects through testing. 2. Reporting process is tried and true. IEM requires certain reports and you select from catalog what you want. (See available reporting below.) 3. Years of staff experience in the maintenance field has resulted in SOP’s for smooth maintenance operation. 4. RCPE (root-cause-problem-elimination) program to reduce machine downtime. 5. Support from a diverse staff that: - prevents extended downtime. - consults with site staff about RCPE issues with no additional costs…………….

  32. Dr. Deming and Maintenance? Dr. Deming’s Fourteen Management Principles are applicable to a good maintenance program: 1. Create constancy of purpose towards improvement of product and service, with the aim to become competitive, stay in business, and to provide jobs. IEM is a PMO. We have standards that our maintenance teams must meet. 4. End the practice of awarding business on the basis of price tag. Instead minimize total cost. Move towards a single supplier for any one item, on a long-term relationship of loyalty and trust. IEM wants the total maintenance program. We know we can reduce your downtime through RCPE and better maintenance standards.

  33. 5. Improve constantly and forever the system of production and service, to improve quality and productivity, and thus constantly decrease costs. IEM has multiple customer’s and this allows discovered improvements to be implemented at all sites as needs permit. We strive to improve our costs and performance so we can satisfy the customer’s needs and expectations. 6. Institute training on the job. IEM offers our maintenance employees skills based training on our website. We currently have 14 modules consisting of 16 classes. 7. Institute leadership. The aim of leadership should be to help people and machines and gadgets to do a better job. Leadership of management is in need of overhaul, as well as leadership of production workers. IEM has the experience to select the right people to change your program for the better.

  34. 8. Drive out fear so that everyone may work effectively for the company. IEM hires maintenance crews with a well rounded background and good education that makes them unafraid to work together and make recommendations to improve the maintenance program. 9. Break down barriers between departments. People in research, design, sales, and production must work as a team, to foresee problems of production and in use that may be encountered with the product or service. The IEM maintenance crew is encouraged to work with the customer’s engineering and production personnel.

  35. 11. Eliminate work standards (quotas) on the factory floor. Substitute leadership. Eliminate management by objective. Eliminate management by numbers, numerical goals. Substitute leadership. Unfortunately our business does require MBO. Our leadership objective, you must have a numerical goal, is a target of less than 2% downtime plant wide. The IEM team works with one another, production, and engineering to reduce downtime.

  36. 12. Remove barriers that rob the hourly worker of his right to pride of workmanship. The responsibility of supervisors must be changed from sheer numbers to quality. Remove barriers that rob people in management and in engineering of their right to pride in workmanship. This means inter alia, abolishment of the annual or merit rating and of management by objective, management by the numbers. IEM empowers its employees to make changes and we are huge facilitators and believe in the CI program. We believe the operator knows the machine. We believe the engineer knows his work. We believe the OEM knows their machines better than anyone else and we work within this knowledge.

  37. 13. Institute a vigorous program of education and self-improvement. As IEM learns at our maintenance sites, this knowledge and experience is shared with all our sites. We train our crews on safety. We share safety issues from site to site. Any knowledge gained at one facility to make maintenance improvements is shared as necessary at other maintenance sites.

  38. Have concerns about maintenance staff transition? We will work with you to implement an effective and fair plan. We can blend your crew and our crew. We can assume responsibilities for your existing maintenance crew. We can supply a full staff on (24) hours notice. Approximately (15) years experience per Technician.
