  1. D.C.I. Dog Crime Investigators The Mysterious Case of the Dog Who Ate the Homework!

  2. The crime . . . The St. Rita Science Fair is this week and all projects are due tomorrow for a science grade in Mrs. Franklin’s 2nd grade class. Rosie had worked for weeks on her project but now it is missing! She has only found a few soggy shreds of colored cardboard—with a dog’s teeth marks on them! Was it one of the twelve family pets? Will Rosie have to tell Mrs. Franklin, “My DOG ate my homework?” Our Dog Detectives need to use the resource books on Domestic Dogs and check the information each suspect provides about him/herself. Look up in the Index the word or words that are underlined and in ALL CAPS and check the facts! If any fact is INCORRECT, the dog is GUILTY!

  3. Round up the usual suspects! Beatriz Beagle Hansel the German Shepherd Pugnacious the Pug Chantal the Border Collie Bounder the Basset Hound Scottie the Scottish Terrier Goldheart, the Golden Retriever Candy the Cocker Spaniel Yapper the Yorkie Doc Dachsund PommeFrite Pomeranian Basil the Bulldog Big Rot the Rottweilers

  4. What the suspects have to say…

  5. Pugnacious Pug ”I was trying to cheer up Bounder the Basset the night Rosie’s homework disappeared. You can ask him! And why would I take her science project? I helped her on a Social Studies report about China one time! Really! Did you know that Pug Dog HISTORY started in China? I’m probably just a suspect because of how I look! No fair! Just because my black nose and muzzle look like I’m wearing a MASK—like a robber!”

  6. Bounder the Basset ”You know it wasn’t me. My PERSONALITY is friendly and I love living with my human family. Besides, I have been laid up on my doggie bed with HEALTH PROBLEMS. I haven’t been outside running and playing enough so I’ve put on a lot of weight. The extra weight has caused my back and leg problems. I’m so sad and depressed that I can’t bound around like I used to so Pugnacious came to cheer me up the night Rosie’s homework was stolen. Ask him where I was.”

  7. Beatriz Beagle ”The night the homework disappeared, I had my famous nose in a book! No, really! It was one of those scratch-n-sniff books and there is one page that smells just like eggs & sausage! Heaven! But get me on the case! I can smell out the culprit because I have a really good NOSE. Even many hours later I can smell what animal has gone by. My beagle nose has such a good sense of smell that I’m part of the U.S. BEAGLE BRIGADE that checks bags at the airports. Using my nose, I can catch that crook!”

  8. Hansel the German Shepherd ”The evening the homework project disappeared, I was on a walk with Rosie’s mom. I keep her safe on her neighborhood walks. German Shepherds are known for their LOYALTY. I’m loyal and brave and I can tell you truly that I’m not the thief. Most of my shepherd friends and I are POLICE DOGS. We can sniff out stolen items. We catch people—and dogs—who break the law!”

  9. Suspects’ statements continued…

  10. Goldheart the Golden Retriever “Rosie was throwing my favorite tennis ball to me on the very night that her homework disappeared. She knows I could not have taken it! And, anyway, retrievers are very POPULARdogs, you know, and we’re very gentle with children and love to please our owners. I don’t think it would please Rosie at all if I ate her homework! But I can be a SEARCH AND RESCUE dog! Retrievers work well in disasters. And for Rosie to have her homework eaten is a disaster!”

  11. Big Rott ”I was at the Dog Park with Rosie’s brother the night her science project disappeared. There is no way I could be the culprit! And, anyway, weRottweilers are known for our LOYALTY. We also are really great GUARD DOGS and we can help protect people’s property. If I’d been at home, you bet I would have guarded the homework!”

  12. Basil the Bulldog ”I think someone would have heard me if I had been sneaking away with the science project. Like other bulldogs, mySNORTING is very loud when I breathe. I just can’t help it! There is no way I can be sneaky! People might suspect me of being a criminal just because I look so fierce, but I really am known for my GENTLENESS. I don’t really have an alibi for where I was when the homework was stolen!”

  13. These suspects claim to be innocent, too!

  14. Candy the Cocker Spaniel ”I’ve been far too busy practicing for my next OBEDIENCE contest to get involved with petty crime. And, in between practices for the contest, I work with Rosie’s grandma as a THERAPY DOG. On the night the homework was stolen, Grandma took me with her to visit her friends in the nursing home to cheer them up. Just say ‘no’ to crime!”

  15. PommeFrite the Pomeranian (P.F. for short)—” “I have problems with my TEETH, like lots of Pomeranians. The night the famous project was stolen, I was having my teeth brushed and my coat groomed by the DFW Mobile Dog Groomers in their big van parked at the house. I love the chicken-flavored toothpaste! And my beautiful coat needs BRUSHING often to keep my long hair from knots & tangles. See how pretty I look?”

  16. Yapper the Yorkie “I could NOT have taken the Science Project! I was hoping that the DFW Dog Groomers was parked at the house to brush my long, silky COAT. Pommefrite was getting groomed so I was waiting at the window for my turn. Rosie’s family likes to GROOM me so that I look my very best. Maybe they will let my be in a dog show, but NOT a Science Fair!”

  17. Are they ALL really innocent?

  18. Chantal the Border Collie “What? Rosie’s project was chewed up?! How? Where? When? I was sleeping by the fire that night, just sleeping. That’s what I do when I’m bored. Rosie’s family knows that I do not like LEARNING TRICKS or run around when I’m bored. I prefer to sleep, like Bounder. Rosie tried to teach me STALKING, but I don’t like to work. Wake me up when you catch the thief!”

  19. Scottie the Scottish Terrier “There is no way I could be the thief. I’ve been in my dog bed with SCOTTIE CRAMP and unable to move. My friends threw a surprise birthday party for me last week and I got so excited I just cramped up! But I don’t think there were any strangers visiting that night. I BARK loudly at visitors and I would have sounded the alarm.”

  20. Doc Dachsund the Dachsund “On the night the homework disappeared, I was DIGGING in the back yard. I know I’m not supposed to dig but my legs can really dig through dirt. It’s fun! My ancestors in Germany used to hunt BADGERS. The name “dachsund” means “badger-dog”.”
