  1. Fire and Ecosystems By Joe Mraz

  2. What are Ecosystems? • Ecosystems are all the cycles, organisms, and objects that make up a habitat. • There are many cycles within a ecosystem, such as the water cycle and nitrogen cycle. BUT… • Did you know that some ecosystems even a have fire cycle???

  3. Ecosystems with a Fire Cycle • Click on which ecosystem you think has a natural fire cycle.

  4. NO! Please Try Again Hint:

  5. WAY TO GO! • Good Job! You’re right. It’s the forest ecosystems that usually rely on a regular fire cycle. • In the United States, the forests around Yellowstone National Park often have fires. • In fact, some trees in these forests actually depend on fires! • Without the fires, certain pinecones don’t open up to let their seeds out!

  6. QUIZ TIME! • What do you think causes more fires in these forest ecosystems? Lightning Strikes during Storms Campfires not being carefully watched Special personnel specifically trained to start fires Bears with flamethrowers

  7. NO! Please Try Again

  8. Nice Job! • Good choice. Lightning does start the majority of fires in these ecosystems. • People do start fires sometimes. Often this is because they aren’t careful with campfires. However, sometimes trained personnel start fires on purpose. By starting a small fire, they can then prevent a huge fire from occurring later, that might be too big to control.

  9. What other Ecosystem has fire? • Grasslands • This ecosystem also depends on fires. In fact, grasslands and plains often have fires more regularly than forests do!

  10. FINAL QUESTION Look at all the forest organisms you to see to your left. Click on which ones you believe don’t benefit from the regular fire cycles in forest ecosystems. If you are stumped, click the arrow below for the answer.

  11. NO! • No this organism still benefits from the regular fires… Please Try Again

  12. It was a TRICK question! • All those organisms benefit from fire! Animals such as bears and moose, while may not like getting close to the fire, actually benefit from all the new growth after the fire. New plants taste good! • Those flowers also benefit from regular fires. Fires give them a chance to may a comeback if they are being overrun by an invasive alien plant. Plus, the new space in the forest lets them get more light! • Humans benefit too! Regular fires stop them from having huge fires, which are dangerous to us and our homes!

  13. Now you Know! • You are now aware of the importance of fires within certain ecosystems. Hopefully, next time you hear of a fire out west or with Yellowstone Park, you will smile and know that its for the good of the ecosystem! The End
