  2. Clinical scheduling timeline • Fall FA Group session • Jan-Feb 1:1 scheduling meeting with FA • March 10-13 Scheduling lottery • April 17 Last day TC (Duluth) • Study for Step 1 • June 2 Start of Period 1, year 3

  4. 1. Requirements for graduation • 76 weeks (credits) clerkships • 56 weeks required clerkships • 20 weeks electives • (That leaves 20+ weeks of FREE TIME in years 3 & 4 calendar) • Pass USMLE Step 2CK (clinical knowledge) • Pass USMLE Step 2CS (clinical skills)

Required clerkships • Medicine I (Med 7500) 6 weeks • Pediatrics (PED 7501) 6 weeks • OB/GYN (OBST 7500) 6 weeks • Surgery (SURG 7500) 6 weeks • Psychiatric (ADPY 7500) 6 weeks • Family Medicine (FMCH 7500) 4 weeks • Neurology (NEUR 7510) 4 weeks • Emergency Medicine (EMMD 7500) 4 weeks • Medicine II (MED 7501)* 6 weeks 48 weeks

  6. 3. “Selectives” requirements • Primary Care Selective 4 weeks • IM, Peds, MP, FM • 2 Surgical subspecialties 2 weeks x2 • Orthopaedics • Neurosurgery • Urology • Otolaryngology ______________________________________ 8 weeks

Electives, a U of M treasure • 20 weeks required • At least 8 weeks “hands on” • NOT away rotations, radiology, research or military rotations • Away rotations, 6-12weeks of credit, NOT “hands on” • >80 electives all fields • New electives will be announced by email throughout the academic year

  8. 5. USMLE Step 2 CK, CS • Must take Step 2 CK by February 1, 2016 • Take it earlier if you did not do well on Step 1 • Military students, take by mid-September 2015 • Must take Step 2CS by December 31, 2015

  9. 6. 28 weeks of free time!! • Residency Interviews!! • Vacation • Save for year 4 as possible • Study time for Step 2CK • Research • Travel • Special projects

Scheduling guide Yr 3 • Take required clerkships>>electives during year 3 • Prepare to succeed in your chosen field, e.g. • For Surgery, OBGYN, surgical subs, take one any surgical clerkship first • For IM, Peds, MP, Neuro take another inpatient clerkship first • For Family Medicine, Psychiatry take another clerkship first • You cannot fit 56 weeks into 48 weeks, so don’t panic!

  11. Scheduling pearls—Yr 3 • USMLE Step 1 • Must take by the end of period 2 • Get letters of recommendation from attending physicians as you go • Vary the sites! • Sequence rarely matters but there are exceptions • Work with your FACULTY ADVISOR to tailor your schedule to your goals

Scheduling guide, Yr 4 • Take most electives, selectives during year 4 • Residency Interview season: take electives, time off during periods 4 and 5 • No required clerkship during period 8 • Do research earlier for v. competitive specialties* • Electives away, aka Audition Electives* • Not required for every specialty • Double edged scalpel *Work with your FACULTY ADVISOR to tailor your schedule to your goals

  13. Scheduling Pearls—Yr 4 • Summer 2015 • Away rotation for highly competitive specialties • Complete research projects • Fall 2015 • Schedule electives, time off for interviews • Complete subinternship or advanced elective in your chosen field

  15. LOTTERY DEMO!! -Scott • March 10-13, 2014—5:30-10:30 PM • 10 groups of students • 15 rounds • 8 minutes per round • Select 1 REQUIRED course per round (11 rounds) • Select remaining electives (4 rounds)

  16. 10. Faculty Advisors in years 3 & 4 • Continue with the same advisor throughout medical school • Year 3 • 1:1 meetings twice per year • Group meetings twice per year • Year 4 • MSPE meeting with FA summer • Frequent email contact re: the Match
