  1. Cloud Storage for Media and Entertainment • Cloud Computing West • Santa Monica • Brian Campanotti • CTO • Front Porch Digital

  2. Agenda • Challenges facing Media and Entertainment (M&E) • What solutions are out there today • What is Content Storage Management (CSM) • Transition from on-premises storage to cloud based solutions • Media-centric versus IT-centric cloud storage solution providers • CSM as a Service (CSMaaS) case studies • The evolution of media-centric cloud storage solutions

  3. The Challenges of Cloud Storage in M&E • The size and scale of the data is immense! • Security concerns are deep rooted • Where is my data actually stored? • Transition from proven on-premises to “services” solutions • Are the economic benefits tangible and can risk be mitigated • Network and bandwidth challenges • Immature and non-domain specific solutions • Internal bureaucracy and legacy mindset shifts • Exit strategy • Domain knowledge and expertise is imperative!

  4. The Challenges of Cloud Storage in M&E • Many formats are used in many different ways (news, post, transmission, web, etc.) • Direct device integration (editors, video servers, etc.) is key • Economically feasible scalability – content demands will grow! • Media enterprise-wide content connectivity enables collaboration and further monetization • Redundancy and content protection is imperative • Sharing across workflow silos requires features such as device integration, transcoding, timecode based partial restore, desktop browsing, etc. • Simple (dumb) storage is simply not enough in these complex environments...

  5. The Industry Today – CSM • Most media companies around the globe have made the transition to “file based” in whole or in part • Content Storage Management (CSM) are a breed of solutions which are at the heart of these media-centric file-based infrastructures • CSM is the middleware which resides between any devices which produces/consumes file-based content and commodity IT-centric storage • CSM solutions are content-aware, object-based intelligent archive solutions • CSM solutions typically rely on spinning disk along with an infinitely scalable data tape storage archives (better TCO, greener, more secure, scalable, high performance, etc.) • CSM solutions have direct integration with business systems to fundamentally link processes, resources and metadata with the file-based content repository • CSM solutions include “content aware” features such as direct device integration, in-path transcoding, timecode partial restore, asset analytics, etc.

  8. What about the Cloud? • Amazon, Microsoft and many others offer scalable cloud-based storage services • Obvious benefits include reduced capital costs and high availability via globally distributed data centres • Unfortunately these solutions are not tuned for “big data” and do not offer much more than simple object storage • CSM is key to M&E storage applications as content awareness and domain knowledge are paramount • Intelligent CSM as a Service (CSMaaS) solutions are now available for a fraction of the cost of IT-centric offerings • Lets look at an example

  9. Amazon S3 Example • Average cost of more than $4,200/TB over five years • Annual storage fee of $900,000 continues forever • How does one eventually “disconnect” from these services in the future? • Our Lynx CSM as a Service (CSMaaS) is less than 20% the cost of Amazon S3 with all the benefits of CSM

  10. Eight interconnected tier-1 stations with local news and program playout Each spoke station has its own CSM solution for local content connected to Lynx Content is automatically replicated to the cloud and available to all other stations Solution includes direct integration with playout automation, automatic request routing, federated global MAM asset browsing, etc. Ingest, playout, publishing, production and reuse can happen anywhere! LYNX CSM Case Study – Hub and Spoke WAN O&O Stations (8) FPD LYNX Facility MAM SaaS

  11. Full Content Storage Management as a Service (CSMaaS) Edge appliances facilitate on-premises CSM tasks, but content is stored in the cloud Any connected facility can provide full Business Continuance as a Service Services can be moved, tuned or scaled on demand Enables global distribution and diversity and removes physical “facility” ties Ideal for for “elastic” application, external productions, etc. LYNX CSM Case Study – Business Continuance WAN Production/ Acquisition Broadcast Playout Transmission/ Delivery Broadcast Playout Transmission/ Delivery LYNXlocal LYNXlocal Business Continuance or External Resources FPD LYNX Facilities CSM as a Service MAM SaaS Main Facility
