About Ms. Lester… • This is my 6th year teaching at Lake Travis Elementary. • I graduated from The University of Texas • I got married in the summer of 2012 – most your kiddos still call me Ms. Barrett • I love Lake Travis and I love teaching! It is so wonderful to watch each child grow through the year.

  3. Yes, STAAR testing starts in third grade. Some of you may feel like this about testing, but….

  4. I’m working hard so your kids feel like this about testing… I am in charge of worrying… I’ll be in touch so that will know I have any areas of concern.

  5. Report Cards Show Grade Averages • Your child will earn a numeric average in • Language Arts (spelling, grammar, and writing) • Reading (vocabulary, comprehension, story/book study) • Mathematics • Social Studies • Science 90 – 100 A 80-89 B 70-79 C Less than 70 F • Your child receives letter grades in • Citizenship, Computers, and Special Areas (Music/PE/Art) • 95 – 100 E 90-94 S+ • 85-89 S 80-84 S- • 75-79 N Below 75 U

You can see grades as they occur! • ParentConnect (TxGradebook) allows you to view grades as I post them. • Graded work comes home weekly in the Tuesday Folder for your review. • Benchmarks (longer, STAAR formatted tests) shared at Fall Parent Conferences. • Citizenship grade is shown weekly in the Tuesday Folder.

  7. Enrichment Pods: • Eight pods are in our grade level, one per each homeroom in third grade. • Pods are together for enrichment, specials, lunch seating, and field trips. • Pod groups helps to encourage diversity and we have a lot of fun!

Homework • Homework policy can be found in 3rd Grade brochure • Tasks, other than reading, should not last more than 30 minutes a night • Students are also expected to read at home for at least 15 minutes and complete a reading log nightly • Write us a note for an explanation of homework not being completed, if needed • Let me know if it is becoming a battle • Students can make-up unfinished homework by staying in during study hall

Our Homework Routine • Reading Log Nightly • Read fifteen minutes then write a 3 sentence summary • Spelling Practice, Mon – Thurs, is routine • Monday – write all words 3 times each • Tuesday – write words in alphabetical order (ABC order) • Wednesdays – choose 5 hardest words and write five sentences • Thursday – student choice/study for test on Friday • Math Practice nightly • Vocabulary Study – review nightly; tests on Fridays • It is okay to work ahead! • Extra copies, spelling lists, vocabulary lists, and worksheets are found on the Third Grade Team Website • Kids can buy homework passes on Fridays. One HW pass = one task skipped; only one tasked skipped per subject per week.

  11. Birthday Celebration • Last fifteen minutes of school on the last Friday of each month in the classroom (dates on LTE calendar) • Read packaging carefully! Please do not send treats with peanuts or peanut oil. • Please do not send treats on other days. Thanks!

  12. Opportunities to Volunteer • Lots of one-time, special event volunteers needed. Sign up at LTE PTA website. • Join PTA if able… more members can mean MORE GRANT OPPORTUNITIES for our school.
