  1. Acute Otitis Media: Treatment • Viruses 25% • Bacterial 75% • Should we use antibiotics? Antibiotics in cases with – • Bilateral otitis media in children less than 2 yr age • Acute otitis media with otorrhoea • Unresolving symptoms > 4days • Severe infection with poor GC AAP. Pediatrics. 2013; 131:e964

Acute Otitis Media: Treatment • If antibiotics are indicated, use high dose amoxicillin • If child has received amoxicillin in last 30 days: Amoxicillin-clavulanate [No advantage of Amoxicillin-Clavulanate in the initial treatment] • Allergy: Clarithromycin or 2nd or 3rd generation cephalosporin

  4. Influenza like illness • Sudden onset of atleast 2 of the following – Fever, chills, headache and myalgia • No role of antibiotics in the treatment of Influenza • Antivirals like oseltamivir reduce the duration of illness • Immunization is the best PROTECTION against influenza
