  1. Unit 10 Choices In Life Grade 11 English Competency 8 Communicates clearly , fluently and Concisely. Level 8.4 Speaks on familiar topics.

  2. Unit 10 Actity 6 Goals Value = Goals = Behavior = Self-esteem .a realistic respect for or favorable impression of oneself; self-respect. 2.an inordinately or exaggeratedly favorable impression of oneself

  3. As a motivational speaker, author and politician, Les Brown has risen to international prominence by delivering a high energy message which tells people how to shake off mediocrity and live up to their greatness

  4. A goal is a result which requires effort to meet. Personal goals are goals set by an individual to influence the direction of his efforts. Personal goals are dreams trying to become reality

  5. Significance Personal goals are sensible and achievable. They are challenging, but realistic. They take effort to attain. They inspire an individual to do more, achieve more, and become a better person

  6. Features Personal goals focus on personal life, who you want to be, what you want to achieve. They can inspire improvements in all areas of life. Career, family, hobbies, education, finances, and physical fitness are some of the aspects of life to which personal goals can be set

  7. Benefits Personal goals are used to improve quality of life, love, and happiness. They inspire a positive behavior that helps work to achieve a desired outcome. They are used to take a dream and make it reality

  8. Timeline Personal goals are meant to be accomplished in a set time; this may take as little as one day or many years to achieve. A set personal goal of buying a dream house may take years, but setting it as a personal goal inspires a higher level of effort toward the goal

  9. It may be useful to categorize life goals: Academic goals – what knowledge and/or qualifications do you want to achieve? Career goals – where would you like your career to take you, what level do you want to reach? Monetary goals – what do you aim to earn at a given point in your life?

  10. Ethical goals – do you want to volunteer some of your time to a good cause or get involved in local events, politics etc.? Creative goals – how do you want to progress creatively or artistically? Domestic goals – how would you like your domestic life to be in the future? Physical goals – do you want to develop your skill in a certain sport or other physical activity?

  11. Once you have thought about your life goals, you can start to plan how best to achieve them.  Set yourself smaller goals for the future.  In ten years I will be…  in five years I will be… etc.

  12. Question 1 What are personal goals ? Explain .

  13. Answer 1 . Personal goals are goals set by an individual to influence the direction of his efforts.

  14. Worked Example: Breaking Down Goals If one of your life goals is to write a book, your plan might be: 5 years from now – publish my book 4 years from now – finish the first draft of my book 3 years from now – complete a university degree in creative writing

  15. 1 year from now – develop an outline for my book Next month – think about ideas and research potential story lines for my book This week – read two books and research potential university courses

  16. Although this example is a very simplistic outline of a major life goal, it should give you an idea of how you can structure big goals and work out the sub-goals that you need to achieve along the way.

  17. Long vs. Short • A short term goal is achieved quickly (finish term paper, wash dishes, mail Christmas cards by Friday, etc.). They help you achieve your long term goals. • Long term goals will take months, years, all your life. For example: graduate from college, become a pilot, lose ___ pounds, etc.

  18. Question 2 Explain ,Short tem goals and long term goals with Examples.

  19. Answer 2 A short term goal is achieved quickly (finish term paper, wash dishes, mail Christmas cards by Friday, etc.). They help you achieve your long term goals

  20. Answer 2 Long term goals will take months, years, all your life. For example: graduate from college, become a pilot, lose ___ pounds, etc.

  21. Do you believe you can achieve? • We need to learn how to dream. • Keep the dream alive, reach your goals • Some people don’t decide or have a vision of what they want out of life. NO GOALS!! • People with goals can see what they eventually want to achieve and they can see just how to get there.

  22. Goals must be realistic – you can’t lose 40 pounds in one month Must prioritize – rank in order of importance you, can’t accomplish it all at once. Do you have the resources you need to reach your goals (money, information, health, energy, skill, etc.). Things to remember:

  23. Individual Assignment: • Write a long list of the goals you think would be important and worthwhile for you to accomplish. (a dream list) • Now have them look at their list and ask themselves the following questions: • Does it fit your values? • Is it realistic? • Is it flexible? • Does it fit in with your other goals? • Will the rewards be worth what you put in to it ? Is it what you want ?

  24. Belief Activity: The “I can’t funeral” • write down on a piece a paper everything you can’t do. • Next write a list of ‘I CAN’. Keep this in your note book/journal. Play song: “I Believe I Can Fly”

  25. If you are not working to where you want to be, you are AUTOMATICALLY working to where you don’t want to be. • Keep your most important values in mind at all times when you are making LESS important decisions. • Don’t sacrifice what matters most for something that doesn’t matter that much to you. There are always trade-offs

  26. There are three types of people • Ones that make things happen • Those that let it happen • And the ones that don’t know what happened. What one are you going to be?

  27. Build a bridge and get over it • You will have challenges • You will have roadblocks • You can have excuses or success but not both

  28. There is very little difference between mediocre and greatness. • The boiling point is only 1 degree different than very warm water. • The difference is tremendous. Steam can power many things. • The difference between a race horse that wins first place and a second place is often fractions of a second.

  29. Writing goals – • SPECIFIC! • written down • MEASURABLE • TIME FRAME • read out loud frequently • posted visibly
