  1. Design of an Energy Saving Cook Pot Alan Berick Aprovecho Research Center

  2. Heat losses from the standard test pot while cooking • Evaporation - 78% • Radiation - 16% • Convection - 6%

  3. Pot configurations tested • Standard test pot(WBT) • Standard test pot with lid(WBT/LID) • Experimental pot(EXP) • Experimental pot with added olive oil(EXP/OIL)

  4. Average Time to Reach Boiling for each Pot Configuration

  5. Average energy/liter to reach boiling for each configuration

  6. Evaporation loss during the high power boiling phase

  7. Energy required to simmer for 30 minutes at 96oC

  8. Evaporation loss during 30 minutes of simmering at 96oC

  9. Summary of the Results

  10. Summary of Results with India Rocket Stove

  11. Heat retention properties of the experimental pot

  12. Rocket Stove With Air Limiting Door Open

  13. Rocket Stove with Air Limiting Door Closed

  14. Charcoal Simmer Runs

  15. Performance Comparisons

  16. Summary • The experimental pot requires 2/3rds less energy in the simmering phase than the standard pot. • The experimental pot requires 20% less energy to bring to a boil than the standard pot • The experimental pot uses the same quantity of energy to simmer without a lid as the standard pot with a lid. • The experimental pot can easily be converted to a retained heat cooker. • The experimental pot will simmer for 45 min. using only the residual charcoal from the boiling phase.

  17. Comparison WBT Pot With Lid and Exp. Pot/oil
