  2. He was the son of a Naval officer Louis Barthes • Roland Barthes studied at Sorbonne where he leant a license in classical letters .

  3. His life from 1939-1948 was largely spent obtaining a license in grammar and philology his first papers • Roland Barthes presented the postmodernist tradition with many useful sociological terms and more significant theorists.

  4. Major Works Roland Barthes's ideas and his approach to writing evolved over the course of his career, and critics often discuss his works in terms of four stages in his critical thinking. In the first stage of his career, which includes such works as Writing Degree Zero, Michelet (1954; Michelet), and Mythologies, Barthes, influenced by the ideas of Sartre and Karl Marx.

Degree Zero • Degree Zero is a book of literary criticism • First published in 1959 • It was his first full length book • Degree Zero is divide into two parts • Part one contains four short essays in which Roland distinguishes the concept of a writing from that of a style or language . • Part two Ronald examines various modes of modern writing and criticizes French socialist realist writers

  7. Signs. • Symbol: • Stands in place of an object - flags, the crucifix, bathroom door • signs. Index: • Points to something - an indicator, such as words like "big" and arrows. Icon: • A representation of an object that produces a mental image of the object represented. • For example, a picture of a tree evokes the same mental image regardless of language. The picture of a tree conjures up "tree" in the brain.
