PLASMA MEMBRANE. MEMBRANE FUNCTION. Controls what enters and leaves the cell SELECTIVELY PERMEABLE (living): Has the ability to control which molecules pass in and out of the membrane SEMI-PERMEABLE (non-living): Does not have the ability to control which molecules pass in and out.

MEMBRANE FUNCTION • Controls what enters and leaves the cell • SELECTIVELY PERMEABLE (living): • Has the ability to control which molecules pass in and out of the membrane • SEMI-PERMEABLE (non-living): • Does not have the ability to control which molecules pass in and out
MEMBRANE STRUCTURE • Phospholipid bilayer • Naturally assemble into a bilayer • Tightly packed • Prevents passage of large molecules • Hydrophilic molecules that are NOT fat-soluble cannot pass through the centre portion of the membrane • Embedded proteins provide a passage for these molecules
FLUID MOSAIC MODEL • Fluid: because phospholipids move around freely • Mosaic: because proteins and cholesterol are scattered throughout the membrane, sugar chains also present • (see links on my class for video clips)
MEMBRANE PROTEIN FUNCTIONS • 1) Communication: protein receptors receive signals from outer molecules (e.g. hormones) and usually trigger a cascade of events inside the cell • Glycocalyx: carbohydrate sugar chains attached to membrane proteins allow for specificity in cell recognition
…MEMBRANE PROTEIN FUNCTIONS • 2) Transport: allows the passage of molecules and ions (electrolytes) • 3) Structural: bind to cytoskeleton inside the cell
HOMEWORK • Draw a fully labelled plasma membrane • Page 67: #1-4 (Grade 11 Text) • Read and Answer Questions - Cardiomyopathy • Article presentations on MONDAY SEPT 24th TEXTWORK: Page 67: #1-4 (Gr11 Text) 1) What is the function of the cell membrane? 2) Name and describe the molecules that make up the cell membrane. 3) Describe the different types and functions of the protein found in the membrane. 4) Contrast the terms permeable and selectively permeable.
