  2. Criticis on current curriculum • Too congested • Mismatch between the content of text books and of curriculum • Putting heavy emphasis on cognitive and less on other aspects • Mismatch between the contents of national exams and contents of curriculum 2 of 10

  3. Response to the critics Curriculum which promotes competencies: Competencies Based Curriculum What does it mean? It consists of two components: (1) intellectualism and (2) competencies to apply the intellectualism into “real life” consisting of: • Religious life • Social life • Economical life • Political life • Esthetical life • Kin esthetical life 3 of 10

The organization of subject matters • Religion and faith promote competences on religiosity • Civic education and personality promote competences on nationalism and good conducts • Sciences and technology promote competences on intellectualism • Esthetics promotes competences on esthetics • Physical and health education promote competences on kinesthetic 4 of 10

  5. Teaching-Learning characteristics • Students centered • Promoting students creativities • Joyful learning • Contextual learning • Provision of various learning experiences • Learning by doing 5 of 10

Three levels of Evaluation • Evaluation by teachers When: daily or weekly tests How: portfolio, homework, and assignments Purpose: diagnoses and improvement • Evaluation by schools When: Mid and end of semester How: essay/paper and pen test Purpose: Class promotion • Evaluation by (central) government When every end of cycle (e.g. Primary) How: essay and multiple choices Purposes: Graduation 6 of 10

  7. What Competencies Based Curriculum consisting of ? It consists of two documents • Competencies consisting of three levels: (1) competencies • of graduates (2) Competencies of group subjects matters, • (3) competencies of individual subject matter; • Syllabi consisting of topics in each individual subject • matter 7 of 10

Who does what • The Document of competencies is prepared by • the central government • Syllabi are prepared by school as a part of School • Based Management scheme In practice schools have several options: (1) adopting “examples” of syllabi developed by the Center for Curriculum, (2) adopting foreign schools’ syllabi, (3) develop their own syllabi, or (4) combinations of the three The requirement: so far as they are aimed at achieving the (national) competencies 8 of 10

How quality assurance is imposed ? • The central government imposes eight national standards • of education as follows: • The standard of content • The standard of process • The standard of educators and education personnel • The standard of equipments and facilities • The standard of management • The standard of funding • The standard of evaluation 9 of 10

Who developing the national standards of education ? • The government establishes the Board of National • Standards of Education whose tasks include: • Defining the national standards of education • Developing the (national) curriculum • Conducting national exams from primary up to secondary • levels 10 of 10
