Study Abroad 101 Study Abroad Advisors • Walk-in advising every Monday through Friday from 10-12 and 1-4 • Individual appointments can be scheduled by calling (812) 855-9304 • Specific information on individual programs, eligibility, credit transfer, and completing all IU study abroad procedures

Study Abroad 101 Program Types • IU Administered and Co-Sponsored • Receive direct IU credit, grades included on IU transcript. • IU administered program fees similar to resident/non-resident tuition. • Co-sponsored program fees are the same for both resident and non-resident students. • Apply through IU.

  7. Study Abroad 101 Program Types • Mainstream • Direct enrollment through the host university or a provider. Take classes with host nationals in the host language. Most extensive course selection. • Island • All courses taken at a program center with other program participants, separate from a local university. Usually located in countries where English is not the host language. Courses taught in English with a possibility of a required host language course. A majority of students are from the U.S. • Hybrid • Mix of mainstream and island programs. Classes with both host nationals in local university and program center with program participants. Courses are generally taught in English and the host language.

  8. Study Abroad 101 Program Types • Non-IU • Receive transfer credit (pending acceptance of Credit Transfer Agreement), grades are NOT included on IU transcript. • Fees set by non-IU program provider. • Application process governed by provider.

Study Abroad 101 Prerequisites • Vary from program to program and in some cases, term to term • GPA • IU requires 2.75-3.0 depending on program. • Non-IU depends on provider. • Semester standing • IU requires students be in at least their 3rd semester to apply for semester and/or AY programs. • Some summer programs available between freshman and sophomore year. • No Intensive Writing, Culture Studies ‘C’, or N&M credit available

  10. Study Abroad 101 Housing • Nearly always arranged by program provider. • Homestay, apartment, or dorm-style. • Some programs have only one housing option, others have several.

Study Abroad 101 Applications • Apply through IU Office of Overseas Study for ALL IU administered and co-sponsored programs. • Semester program applications are typically due semester prior to studying abroad. • Academic year programs generally due the January prior to AY start date. • Summer programs are due in February. • Non-IU applications – see program provider for details.

Study Abroad 101 Things to Consider • How long do you want to study abroad? • Do you want to study in English or another language? • What subjects do you want to study? • Can you satisfy major, minor, or general education credits? • Do you want to live with a family, in a dorm, or an apartment? Live with U.S. students or host nationals? • Cost? • Where do you want to study (e.g. in a particular country, in a large city)?

Study Abroad 101 Steps to take • Research options • Use the resources available online and in the center • Contact a returnee: https://www.indiana.edu/~overseas/cgi-bin/email_lookup.pl • Meet with an advisor (if desired) • Prepare academically (complete prereqs, save electives, etc.) • APPLY • OVST will provide academic advising, pre-departure orientations, and continuing support during program and upon your return
