  4. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath & the Birth of Metal Black Sabbath formed in Birmingham, England in 1966. The band progressed from blues rock to heavy metal to progressive as it evolved over the years. At a time when other bands were heavily into peace, love and flower power, Sabbath set itself apart with music about drugs, the occult, and anger at The Establishment. They were also unique in their incorporation of gothic and folk music elements. Their unique sound, coupled with OzzyOsbourne’s wild onstage theatrics helped set the stage for today’s shock rock artists.

  5. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath & the Birth of Metal Combining the visceral power and intensity of hard rock with the finesse and delicacy of British folk music, Led Zeppelin redefined rock in the Seventies and for all time. The combination of Jimmy Page’s powerful, layered guitar work, Robert Plant’s keening, upper-timbre vocals, John Paul Jones’ melodic bass playing and keyboard work, and John Bonham’s thunderous drumming made for a band whose alchemy proved enchanting and irresistible.

  6. Glam Metal • Glam metal is a sub-genre of heavy metal music that arose in the late 1970s in the United States. Glam Metal is also referred to as Hair Metal. Generally, glam metal has hedonistic lyrics, often focuses on sex, alcohol, and drugs, and many of the first wave bands had songs pertaining to the occult. Musically, glam metal songs often featured distorted guitar riffs, shred guitar solos, hard hitting drumming, and complementary bass. Glam metal is often frowned upon by fans of other genres of metal as being too pop influenced. Many glam metal performers became infamous for their debauched lifestyles, long, teased hair and use of make-up, gaudy clothing (chiefly consisting of tight denim jeans, spandex, leather and headbands), and accessories.

  7. Mötley Crüe • Originated in Los Angeles, California. MötleyCrüe is considered one of the most successful American Glam metalbands, having sold over 42 million albums worldwide and 25 million records in the US alone. The band's first release was the single "Stick to Your Guns/Toast of the Town."During the 'Crüesing Through Canada Tour '82' (dubbed the 'I'm in Hell' tour by the band members), there were several widely-publicized incidents. First, the band were arrested and then released at Edmonton International Airport for wearing their spiked stage wardrobe through Customs and for Vince's small carry-on filled with porn magazines.

  9. Death Metal • Death metal may include chromatic chord progressions and a varied song structure without a standard verse-chorus arrangement; compositions instead tend to emphasize an ongoing development of themes and motifs. The genre is often identified with down-tuned rhythm guitars, fast percussion, and dynamic intensity. Blast beats and exceedingly fast drum patterns are frequently used to add to the ferocity of the genre. Death metal lyrics usually address more nihilistic themes often using gruesome metaphors to explore a larger concept.

  11. Characteristics • Heavy metal is traditionally characterized by loud distorted guitars, emphatic rhythms, dense bass-and-drum sound, and vigorous vocals. The typical band lineup includes a drummer, a bassist, a rhythm guitarist, a lead guitarist, and a singer. The electric guitar and the sonic power that it projects through amplification is historically the key element in heavy metal. In terms of live sound, volume is considered vital. One of the signatures of the genre is the guitar power chord.
