  1. EGU2011-3251 Paul PILLOT – Lycée S Veil – Valbonne – France MinUSc : an open-source web application to explore mineral structures The viewing panel allows interactive manipulation of the model in 3D (rotation, translation, zooming). The different buttons, drop-down menus give commands to change the display. Each action triggers an explanatory text to provide students with the meaning of the setting they chose. Based upon the innovating Jmolapplet to display 3D structures (LGPL), using peer-reviewed data provided by the Crystallography Open Database (COD initiative), MinUScaims at giving students researchers like tools to study geology at the nanoscale level in a 3D environment How is a crystal organized ? Picture : David KRING Quartz Coesite Quartzsamples from drilling made at the KT boundary exhibit uncommon recrystallization patterns (right). Some of the striae bear a new mineral : the coesite Comparison between both minerals shows that while they share the same composition, Coesite has a higher density hence indicating that an impact occurred 3 Si 3 0 + 4 Si 1 O 1 O 6 0 27 0 + 12Si SiO2σ=3.055 SiO2σ=2.650 What can crystals structures tell us about rocks transformations through metamorphism ? Minerals are ionic crystals. When they bear water, it is embedded in the lattice as OH- ions. Here we try to find how water behaves during increasing metamorphism in subduction zones Green schist Blue schist Eclogite Illustration : Pierre Perez Picture : Georges Grousset Picture : Christian Nicollet Picture : Pierre Jauzein While aging and subducting, the oceanic crust undergoes metamorphism due to changes of pressure and temperature. New minerals appear. How can these be related to the neighbouring melting of the mantle ? Jadeite Garnet Glaucophane Hornblende Chlorite
