  1. Introduction to programming http://codehs.com/register?plan=school 1 ED95 Computers work by following instructions written in a special code which the computer can understand Students may have looked at Scratch but will not have covered any programming beyond this. LO: Know how to use algorithms to control Karel using a programming language ELO: AfL LO: : Karel programming – seeing the results of their programming instantaneously 1 – 2- 1 demos By outcome and help given. More able will be able to complete more activities and less able may need more support in accessing the learning for each activity. Video resource is available if students wish to watch it again Students progress through the Karel activities online Keywords Algorithm Command Programming language Syntax Students will be demonstrating correct spelling and layout as the programs they create will not run if they spell something incorrectly or they do not indent the code correctly. 10 mins: Teacher hands out making tea cards. Students rearrange cards into the correct order Key message: Computers use algorithms which are like a set of instructions Explain login procedures for the computers. Explain how to access the internet and the codeHS website. Watch 1st video. Explain login and begin coding! 10 mins: THINK – how has lesson changed how you think?FEEL – how do you feel about what you have learnt?LEARN – what have you learnt that you didn’t previously know? Students continue with the Karel activities. TA supporting where available 5 mins: Mini white boards Q and A What do we call a sequence of instructions? What is the algorithm for turning right? P L4:Use selection and repetition correctly in your programs P L3: Plan a sequence of instructions for something you want to happen P L5: Use variables, lists and simple procedures in your programs
