  26. Activity VI: Reading strategy: Recognizing reference markers When you read a text, you can always find reference markers such as ‘it’, ‘she’ or ’they’ that refer to a previously mentioned object, person, group or idea. The use of reference markers is to avoid repetition of key

  27. words because this is considered to be bad style, For example, instead of saying ‘the Acropolis’ all the time, the author will try to vary the expression by using the reference marker ‘it’ or words such as ‘the monument’. Recognizing Reference markers will help you read a difficult article. If you come across a
