  3. Brief history: • Last year, we celebrated 230years since the establishment of higher education in Oradea. In 1780, a higher education institution in Philosophy was created in Oradea. In 1788, it became the Faculty of Law; yet it was transferred to Cluj-Napoca in 1934. • This year, we celebrate 48 years of continuous higher education – on the 1st of October 1963, an order of the Ministry of Education settled a three-year Pedagogical Institute in Oradea.

In May 1990, a Decree of the Romanian Government established the Technical University of Oradea, later called the University of Oradea. • The mission of the University of Oradea is to train specialists in different fields of science and culture and to provide knowledge for social and economic development.

  5. Development • In the past years, the University of Oradea has undergone a dynamic development, turning into a European university due to the great number of partnerships with universities worldwide, the committed teaching staff, and the top generation facilities.

  6. Our university has an increasing number of students and academic staff: 17,700 learners, out of which: 14,000BA students (700 foreigners), 3,230 MA students and 433 doctoral students; • 1,100 members of the academic staff; • The University of Oradea is the 19th university in the country out of 100 public and private higher education institutions as a result of an assessment carried out by the Ministry of Education, Research Youth and Sports in 2011.

  7. Our university has 15 faculties providing: • 108 BA programmes; • 86 MA specialisations; • 10 doctoral fields.

  9. Research • Our university has six Doctoral Schools in the following fields: Philology, Geography, Biomedical Sciences, Engineering, and Social Sciences. • Over 30 institutional research centres.

The National Centre of Geothermal Research • Established in 1992 by an Order of the Ministry of Education • The main objective of the centre is to exploit the most important geothermal resources in North-Western Romania • Facts about the research in geothermalism: • 43 research contracts • 8 patents • Over 220 papers delivered at national and international events

International relations • Over 200 agreements with foreign universities • European mobilities: Erasmus, Leonardo, scholarships granted by agencies and EU Member States • The University of Oradea was placed first in Romania in the Leonardo da Vinci programme in the academic year 2006-2007 • From the point of view of Erasmus mobility, the University of Oradea was the fifth higher education institution in the country in the academic year 2010-2011 • Last academic year, we had: • 154 Erasmus outgoing students • 64 Erasmus incoming students • 306 teaching assignment mobilities • Over 700 foreign students choosing to study at the University of Oradea aside from European mobility programmes

Career orientation • The University of Oradea has two career orientation centres: • Career Services Centre • Psychological Counselling and Career Orientation Centre - EGO PLUS • Their mission is to support students and graduates for successful career orientation through counselling and information thus facilitating their access to labour market. They also provide the students in Psychology with training opportunities.

Material support • Total surface of educational area: 43,900 sqm • 250 laboratories • 95seminar rooms • Over 100 lecture rooms and lecture halls • Aula Magna (300 places), Aula of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy (200 places), Aula of the Faculty of Environmental Protection (200 places) • Expoflora Complex • Sports grounds • Agricultural lands

The university library has 2,000 places in the reading rooms • 2 dormitories are available for students and 2 more are in construction (total 1,700 places) • Students’ canteen • The wooden church “Sf. Arhanghel Mihail şi Gavril” (Saint Archangels Michael and Gabriel), a historical monument • The “Gaudeamus” didactic and research unit at Stâna de Vale • 2 medical units • The University Press
